NLL Insider guide to a San Jose roadtrip
With a steadily improving team, a good core of young players, and new owners willing to put in the time and money to grow the franchise, everything’s looking up for the San Jose Stealth. Everything except for attendance figures. Given time those will be on their way up as well, but for now, if you’ve got a weekend off and you’re willing to hop on a plane, think about finding your way to San Jose. They could use the ticket sales.
Where they play:
The HP Pavilion, AKA The Tank, is home to the San Jose Stealth, Sharks, and SaberCats, and hosted a stop on the Spice Girls reunion tour. (Don’t act like that doesn’t matter.) This place is a ten minute drive from the airport, or a 50 minute public transit trip. Here’s your full list of driving directions. The arena is located across the street from San Jose Diridon Station, which is serviced by Caltrain, ACE, and the VTA.
Where to stay:
The Crowne Plaza Downtown will put you within walking distance of the HP Pavilion. Walk up S Almaden Blvd., take a left at W Santa Clara St., and in two minutes you’re there. The Crowne Plaza will also put you in the general vicinity of probably anywhere else you’d want to go, and will have you surrounded by public transit options.
Post-game:
The spot you’re looking for is The Brit, a British pub and restaurant (who would have guessed?) and a five minute walk from HP Pavilion.
Restaurants:
You’ve got Original Joe’s for Italian, Taiwan for Chinese, and Sushi Maru for…sushi. If you’d like to return from your trip and tell your friends about what a charming little place you ate at, don’t miss Left Bank in Menlo Park. BONUS: this place will give you an excuse to talk in a horrible french accent.
If you’ve got a day to kill:
Of course you can take a little trip to San Francisco or Monterey, but don’t neglect Napa Valley in your list of day trip options. The Napa Valley Wine Train is always a hit, unless you have kids in which case they’ll probably hate you for a whole day. I don’t think the website could even find someone younger than 60 to pose for a picture.
If you’re sticking close to SJ:
There’s still plenty to do. The Tech Museum is within walking distance of your hotel. Comedy Sportz is a family-friendly long-running comedy show that pits two improv teams against each other. The Happy Hollow Park and Zoo is open year-round, as is the Mystery Spot. And if your kids don’t hate you enough after the wine train, try the Quilt Museum.
