Fight Club Ranking

I was thinking about that last Fight Club post we had like a month back.
I gotta say, it really bothered me. I couldn’t believe I stooped to such low levels with it.
Lacrosse is so much more than just watching the big boys drop the mitts all night long.
I felt like a real savage. Barbaric even. I think I really dumbed down the sport that day. Sorry guys. My bad.
Where do I get off ranking ten guys when it comes to fighting in our game? Seriously!! Is this amateur hour (don’t answer that)?
So after sleeping on it a bit and wondering what I could do to redeem myself, there really was only one thing I could do… TWO SEPARATE RANKINGS for the heavies and the lightweights!! It was about as obvious as the mountain of snow that poured down on us in TO yesterday.
Two rankings, duh!!! What the hell was I thinking mashing all those names into one rundown?? Stupid.
Anyways, I checked in with a bunch of people that I know like the tilts (which is pretty much everyone, so stop lying and acting all PC and sh** and saying you oppose fighting in lacrosse, cuz you love it!) and came to a happy median of 190 lbs. as our cut off between heavyweights and the little guys. Or in and around there at least. Know guys like Shawn Evans and Travis Hill like to mix it up with the bigger kids once in a while, and we’ll factor that into both rankings.
So what we did was dropped anyone from that original pre-season ranking that won’t be playing pro ball this year. So even though I still think he’s probably the best in the biz, Tim O’Brien is outta the top ten for the first time in like five years. Ya gotta be playin’ or you’re not on the radar right now. It’d be boring as hell otherwise.
We also factored in the bit of fisticuffs we’ve seen this year, which gave us what we have below…
Heavyweights 191 lbs. +
(1) Geoff Snider
Still the champ for sure. Threw McCready around like a rag doll and even showed how classy he was when he cocked up the ol’ rifle when he could see Pat was in no man’s land.
(2) Troy Bonterre
Thanks God Edmonton picked up Big Daddy last week. Unfortunately though, Edmonton and Philly don’t play this year, which means unless someone take Snid’s belt, Bonterre is gonna be fighting to simply hang onto the #1 contender spot. Unless they meet in the final (yeah right, jokes).
(3) Scott Evans
Gave Snider all he could handle last year and might need to drop ‘em soon to spark some kinda wake up call in Rochester if this slide goes on any longer. An Evans fight has as many asses outta the seats as JR. goin’ cross crease.
(4) Ryan McNish
With an increased role on D, not sure how much McNish is gonna be dancin’ this year. Little Daws wanted a go, but McNish threw on the ol’ seatbelt while the two fell to the floor King Kong & Godzilla styles. Still holdin’ on this high based solely on rep right now. Will definitely have a chance to dance this weekend with Buffalo in town.
(5) Drew Candy
He’ll stick up for his homies no matter what. His record might not be the greatest considering he takes on all comers, but few have the same sized, well… you know whats, that Candy has. He’ll fight ya if you look at him funny. Always good for a go.
(6) Kyle Laverty
One of if not the most hated guys in the game, Laverty will not only fight ya but get in your had for 60 straight and totally F up your game. Needs a big tilt soon cuz he’s got some hungry heavies breathing down is neck for this 6 spot. Laverty versus McNish this weekend would be insane.
(7) Mike Kilby
Now that he’s pretty much 100% from shoulder surgery, expect to see Kilby back serving up some knuckle sandwiches (yeah, I went there) with a side order of chips (well, cuz I like chips with my sandwiches). Dudes tough as nails and hopefully will be droppin’ ‘em a lot more this year if the Jax need anymore sparks to get ‘em going. So yeah, he’ll be dancin’… a lot.
(8 ) Jeff Moleski
Like his Necks’ teammate, Moleski’s rep from past battles is keepin’ him in the running here. We all know this kid is one tough mutha, but let’s see thems fists fly more often Jeff. Don’t let lacrosse get in your way of climbing the Fight Club charts brotha.
(9) Eric Martin
He one punch KO’d Jordan Hall last week and is easily the toughest Yank in the game since Jay Jalbert had to give up the game. Would love to see him dance with a name guy though, cuz even though Hallsy’s one tough kid, he ain’t heavy (he’s my brother… am I the only one that was on the floor laughing when I read mpdsmom’s post about this tune on the youtube link I just set ya up with).
(10) Paul Dawson
He’s kinda our wild card pick this time around, and for good reason. The former Oakville Blades’ cap proved in hockey that he can throw down with the best of ‘em and as a FT defender with the Stealth now, you best believe heads are gonna roll. Coulda been a beauty with McNish.
Lightweights -190 lbs.
(1) Shawn Evans
We hyped Tom Hajek in our pre-season poll, but Evy is just too insane, too active and too, well, too F’n awesome not to have as our lightweight champ. He’s drawn McCready already this year and always fights the big boys if they try pushin’ him around. Kids got fists of fury and a head built like a boulder.
(2) Tom Hajek
Think anyone that knows Hajek or has seen him fight in the past (that Glenn Clark KO was legendary) knows dude is tough, but for some reason the Wings D backbone hasn’t been droppin’ ‘em that much lately.
(3) Travis Hill
He buckled the hell outta Cam Woods in that crazy game in Toronto earlier this year and has some pretty big wins on his resume too. Until this year though, not sure the masses realized what a killer this kid really is.
(4) Pat McCready
Has already fought twice this year, a loss to Snider and a draw with Evy. No doubt he’s tough and has been for years. Another one of those guys that fights guys on both sides of our cut-off.
(5) Chris McElroy
The Rush cap has fists that are probably faster than even his wheels and will go with absolutely anyone, anytime, anywhere. Teed off in a pretty high profile tilt with McBride last year that he won hands down.
(6) Jon Harasym
Doesn’t fight as much as some on this list, but God damn did he ever make short work of Jarrett Park the other week. Always have known Harasym as a tough as nails worker, hopefully we see him dancin’ on a more consistent basis in the bigs now. Easily the most intense Rock player in 08 so far.
(7) Sean Polock
Even though he’s rockin’ the scoring charts lately, Pollock has always been more than willing to go with anyone on the floor. Give ‘em the nod and nine time outta ten he’ll oblige.
(8) Jamie Taylor
Here’s a name most pro fans don’t think about as a fighter, but Tails has fought with the best of ‘em over the years and has a left that’ll put you to sleep faster than a Tim Sylvia fight. Now that he’s 100% and hopefully has a starting gig with the Rock, we can only hope James Taylor dances like we all know he can.
(9) Andrew McBride
Probably the lightweight version of Drew Candy. Might not have the best record of late, but he’ll stick up for his boys and really is one tough mofo. Always capable of a big win but doesn’t have the hit list yet to be in the upper echelon of the Fight Club.
(10) Pat Merrill
Pat’s slipped into pervious Fight Club ranks in years past and very rarely turns down a scrap. Might not have any high profile wins, but he’s defiantly one of the more active lightweights in the pros, which we love.
