And then there was Plaid

So, most of you know me as the President and Founder of the Knighthawks Krew. Well, as I’ve said in previous blogs, I learned from the PWFC and the Bandits Brigade how to form and grow a fan club and we’ve grown every year of our existence.

Some places don’t need an “Official” fan club, like Toronto and Colorado, they pack their venues and do roadtrips without “Official” clubs. For some of the other cities, having a fan club takes pressure off of the front office and lets them concentrate on increasing revenue streams, not taking ticket orders for a game they won’t see a dime from. So, in the past month or so, I’ve been following a great situation happening in the Western Division: the formation of the Plaid Platoon in Portland.

This formation should be applauded. Not just because it is fan founded and team recognized, but because you can feel the passion and pride that the fans feel for that team in only its third season. Also, with team recognition and support they are light years ahead of where a bunch of us were in our first years of existence as fan clubs. A table at every home game to promote joining and roadtrips that don’t make any money for the Lumberjax, support from a faithful fanbase no matter what their current record sits at, and even an official fan club logo and patch to add to jerseys, etc. I’ll give a standing ovation to Angela Batinovich for recognizing the value of a fan club, especially one that the front office doesn’t have to staff.

With the likes of Ryan Powell, Brodie Merrill and Dallas Eliuk on the team, there is plenty of fun on the floor. Now, thanks to the formation of the Plaid Platoon, fans can experience pre- and post-game parties and build friendships on roadtrips that are a little farther than the typical Roc-Buff I-90 express.

Nice job Portland, now make a run on that Western playoff berth.
