Q&A with Portland Rookie, Cory Conway
Cory Conway was selected No. 16 overall in the 2007 NLL Entry Draft and the forward has slowly worked himself into the rotation in Portland (3-5).
He cracked the line-up February 2, and scored his first NLL goal and three points in an 11-10 victory over Edmonton. He has played three games since and now has four goals and six points in four games. The ‘Jax have won three of those four games that he’s played.
6’2”, 195lbs, Conway actually still has another year of Jr. left. Named Victoria’s rookie of the year in 2006, Conway then led the Victoria Jr. A Shamrocks in scoring this past summer with 68 points in 17 games. He put up a team high 14 goals and had 27 points in eight playoff games.
Can you talk about how you worked your way into the line up?
I’ve tried to stay focused and patient.
So how was first NLL experience?
It’s been crazy. We’ve been in some real battles.
Talk a little about how your experience with Victoria Jr. A has helped with your development?
Victoria is where I’ve grown up playing and it’s been an ideal environment for me to be continuously evolving as a lacrosse player.
Are you now taking away stuff from playing with guys like Dawson and Malawsky?
Absolutely, both are great players and have been helping me make the transition to professional lacrosse.
What are some specific tricks you’ve learned already from those guys?
Different ways to deceive the goalie while shooting.
Now, you went to Stoney Brook. Curious, how’d you get down there?
I was recruited by Lars Tiffany who currently coaches at Brown University.
And the decision to not play more college?
There was a conflict of interest between the current Stony Brook coaching staff and myself… I’m happy with where I am now, playing lacrosse at the highest level.
Do you try to model your game after anyone?
No.
What do you do outside lacrosse?
Spend time with family and friends.
Favorite music track/s right now?
Pink Floyd
Lastly, what’s the best piece of lacrosse advice you’ve ever received?
Practice makes perfect.
Portland’s next game is Saturday, Mar. 1 versus Edmonton.
Also, realize this one was a little light so here’s a look back at my interview with Rochester’s Matt Lyons that may have got lost in the shuffle last week with all the Edmonton happenings.
Had a quick talk with Rochester’s Mat McLeod last night as well. He echoed some of Lyon’s comments about how the two are enjoying their time in Rochester and looking to help the team turn the corner. With all of the talent in Rochester, the two first round picks from Orangeville Ontario are being asked to try and create space for the Knighthawks’ top scorers. They’re enjoying the ride and trying to learn as much as they can.
