A massive Rush of relief

Do battle for six games and come away empty, it starts to wear a brother down. You try doing your job in front of paying customers and the scrutiny of media and see how long you keep your cool.

I suppose credit is due to the Rush for not one single member of the organization going Hal McCrae on anyone’s ass during the losing, so maybe that’s why it was kinda nice to see these guys chalk up their first win of the season over the weekend.

“I think a lot of us went into the game and felt like, man, this season couldn’t have gone any worse. Let’s just relax and have fun and you could see it in so many of the guy’s faces,” A.J. Shannon told The Edmonton Sun of Saturday’s 9-7 win over the Portland Lumberjax.

Coach Bob Hamley was weighing the possibility of massive changes to the lineup, but figures to hang tight before changing anything. And it wasn’t so much the win that changed his mind. It was how his team won.

“A week ago I might not have been so confident but after the type of character and heart I saw (Saturday) night it gives me some confidence now in our team,” the coach said.

If nothing else, maybe it was hearing a certain song during intros in Portland Saturday night that fired up the Rush.
