Rookie Rankings: Week 10

Earlier this week in his Thumbs Up / Thumbs Down post, Tutka noted how Duke’s Matt Danowski scored a sweet goal over the weekend. Well, the goal made Sportscenter’s Top 10 and IL TV has the clip.

Go to about the :50 mark of the video highlights to check it out.

The announcer calls it an “around-the-world” shot. Is that one of those American sayings? I’ve always called it a “tommy twist”.

My understanding of the shot was that Tom Marechek actually invited it, and so the move was named after him.

Grant probably uses it most effectively today. Anyway, love when guys pull out that shot. And I look forward to Danowski and Zach Greer cracking the NLL soon enough.

Here’s a list of the 2008 Top 10 NLL Rookies after the first ten weeks.

Top 3

1 (1) Craig Point, Minnesota – Picked up the league’s Rookie of the Month award for February, as voted on by the GMs and head coaches of the league’s 12 teams. Arguably could have also won the award in January, too. No reason to bump him from the top post. (17g, 22a, 8gp)

2 (2) Jordan Hall, New York – Tied in rookie scoring with Point, with 39 points, Hall is helping the Titans contend for a playoff spot this season and has been a huge addition, sitting third on his team in points. Bye this week, then in Toronto (14g, 25a, 69gbs, 9gp)

3 (3) Merrick Thomson, Philadelphia – Although he’s only played six games, Thomson sits Top 20 in the league in goals scored, and is averaging over five points per game. He was the league’s Rookie of the Month in January. Philly hosts Toronto this week (16g, 15a, 6gp)

Note: Point and Thomson are on pace for 78 point seasons. That’s 20 points better than 2007 Rookie of the Year Ryan Benesch scored last season for Toronto. Hall is also on pace to better Benesch’s total by 10 plus points. Philadelphia’s Athan Iannucci had just 54 points in his rookie year (2007).

Rounding out the Top 10

4 (6) Kyle Ross, Minnesota – Big test this weekend in Buffalo after team allowed 16 goals to Buffalo and then 17 to Philly.
5 (4) Tyler Codron, Portland – Continues to play well and has the opportunity to learn from one of the best in Brodie.
6 (5) Jaime Rooney, Philadelphia – Looked fantastic early, but just two goals on 12 shots in last two games.
7 (NR) Pat Heim, Philadelphia – Picked up three assists against New York and overall has had a great start in Philly.
8 (NR) Brandon Swamp, Buffalo – Healthy scratch early but has looked strong in recent games. Fellow rookie defender Kyle Schmelzle has also looked good.
9 (7) Frank Resetarits, San Jose – Had high expectations but hasn’t really shined. Will be tested in Colorado this weekend should he dress. Fellow first round selection Tom Johnson has only played in two games.
10 (10) Matt Lyons, Rochester – Picked up two goals, three points in Rochester’s romp of Chicago last weekend. Bye this week.

As Tutka noted in that Thumbs Up / Thumbs Down post, New York rookie Rory Smith also had a good tilt last weekend.
