NLL Edition: The Money Ballers
I ended up watching the Toronto versus New York game last Friday night mainly cuz I was really interested in a couple match ups that I knew that game was gonna end up developing.
Me and fellow Insider Steve Kojima sometimes make sure we take in different games so that we can swap scouting reports afterwards and take in as much from the weekend as we can. We’re smart, but also very cheap (so ladies, the lineup starts here).
Either way though, Steve was dialing in the San Jose and Philly tilt, but even after New York was done thumping TO, I had to blow a cool seven bones on the fourth period from Philadelphia after I noticed what was shakin’ out after 45 minutes of ball. It meant four less tacos when I made a run for the boarder on Saturday night, but I’m all about sacrifice, so I took in the game instead. Remember that people, when the writer of the year nod is gonna get handed out, Tuts sacrifices like a champ!! Do not forget that. I am praying I didn’t pass over those tacos for nothing.
Anyways…
San Jose scored early and I was like, “Dang, are these guys actually gonna knock off the Wings this late?!?!?” And then Athan Iannucci showed up and you know how the story goes. The dude kills it and sends the opposition packing. Same sh** different day kinda thing with him this year.
Anyways, after I updated The Money Ballers this week, I got to thinking, who’s killing it hardest that late in the game the most? The Money Ballers takes into consideration scoring in tight games for the entire 60, which I think makes sense, but which ball player this year does it best when there’s only 15 minutes left on the clock (+ OT)?
Not surpisingly, Iannucci leads the pack there too, but just by an even bigger margin than what we’ve seen on the main boards. Here’s a look at his digits and the other top fourth period performers (with their Money Ballers rank in brackets)…
| 1 | Athan Iannucci (1) | 20.5 |
| 2 | Jake Bergey (3) | 13.5 |
| 3 | Luke Wiles (T6) | 12.0 |
| 4 | Dan Dawson (T19) | 11.5 |
| 5 | Ryan Ward (2) | 11.0 |
| 6 | Josh Sanderson (5) | 11.0 |
| 7 | Jeff Zywicki (T11) | 10.5 |
| 8 | Colin Doyle (T11) | 10.0 |
| 9 | Andy Secore (14) | 10.0 |
| 10 | Jason Wulder (T19) | 9.5 |
| 11 | Craig Point (4) | 9.0 |
| 12 | John Tavares (T6) | 9.0 |
| 13 | Blaine Manning (T11) | 9.0 |
| 14 | Sean Pollock (18) | 9.0 |
| 15 | Mike Hominuck (T31) | 9.0 |
What does that show? You mean outside of the fact that Nooch is a God damn freak of nature this year? Probably nothing else, but interesting none-the-less. Especially when you look at how much guys like Dan Dawson and even Mike Hominuck have jumped up when you only factor in their late game magic.
Anyways, here’s this week’s top clutch guys with Mammoth studs Gavin Prout and Dan Carey making massive jumps in the charts after huge games against Calgary.
