Lumberjax pull off an NLL stunner
They’re pounding their plaid-covered chests with both fists this morning, these Lumberjax of Portland having pulled off the National Lacrosse League upset of the day after slaying the Colorado Mammoth, 16-15 on Thursday night.

Upset of the day? You betcha. Yeah, I know there’s five more games to be played this weekend but with the way this unpredictable season’s been goin’, there’s no tellin’ what’s gonna happen so we’re just gonna take it day by day. Even the upsets. So back to Thursday’s game in Portland, it was an 18-year-old kid who scored the winner for Portland when Peter Jacobs beat Gee Nash with 1:06 left. Just one day after Portland coach Derek Keenan says his boys aren’t a 3-7 team, they’re not! They’re 4-7 and Colorado is now 6-4, its first-place lead in the West division whittled down to half a game. Isn’t there a discussion about how interesting the West is gonna be down the stretch?
The real shame of the loss for Colorado is that a nine-goal effort by Brian Langtry was spoiled. Nine goals? Yeah, Langtry popped in nine, just one short of the single-game record of 10 set by Paul Gait (1994) and Gary Gait (1999). Dan Dawson led the way for Portland with four goals and two assists, while Derek Malawsky had two goals and seven assists.
