Thumbs Up / Thumbs Down: Week 13
Just shooting a quick thumbs athca tonight.
Between following up on 30 plus rumors makin’ the rounds today about deals that are about to go off before tomorrow’s trade deadline, combined with The Hills hittin’ MTV in about ten minutes, I don’t have a lotta time on my hands.
Anyways, couple thumbs after the jump, including a train wreck of a half-time show at the latest Stealth game that has season ticket holders wonderin’ if the team has anyone with any marketing background anywhere in their offices!!
Thumbs Up
Aaron Wilson
Massive thumbs up to the Rock’s Aaron Wilson who had a monster of a weekend. He shot the lights out against the Rush and followed that up with an even bigger game against the Bandits. If he was in any kinda mental funk before Easter, ya gotta think he’s shaken that off and is ready to wake that Rock O up for the long haul.
Colin Doyle
The dudes a lacrosse mastermind, it’s as simple as that. Sparked that sick Stealth fourth period come from behind in an even slicker final 15 minutes than the one Iannucci burned his boys with a week earlier.
Peter Morgan
His transition to, well, a transition role has not only redefined Morgan’s pro game, but also give the Jax another lethal two-way threat that was definitely a huge part of their win over Colorado on Good Friday. Next to little Daws going from tender to D man, this is definitely this year’s next best role reversal.
Matt Roik
I’ll definitely echo Chris Hall’s props for Matt Roik in Chi-Town this past week. Roik, who was third in line in Philly, has looked amazing back in a starting gig with the Rox. He had an insane third period that all but shut the Hawks’ O up and gave the rest of his team the confidence to shoot the lights out in the fourth. I was always a big B Miller fan (and still am) but great move by Batley to score Roik, who a lot of people had written off.
Thumbs Down
Beats by the Bay
Trying to stay super positive and upbeat in today’s post, but if I let this one slip by without mention, I’d feel like I was breaking some sorta moral crime here. I don’t wanna make this a racial thing or a I don’t take people getting an education seriously thing (checkout the Stealth presser and you’ll know what I mean), but what in the F were the Stealth thinking when they booked their half-time show this past weekend (FYI, they booked these guys)?!?!?! I think their marketing department mighta missed their demographic target maybe just by an inch (and by inch I mean like a hundred F’n miles!!!) or so when they hired Beats by the Bay to perform their breakout single (and by breakout single I mean I’ve never heard of this song in my entire life type of single) in front of the apparent 3K and change at the HP Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.
I actually talked to a Stealth season ticket holder today who told me that during the band’s second performance, his group started throwing up their “Get in the Box” signs up at them, but feels they probably didn’t get it. “Unfortunately, I don’t think they even knew what a box was let alone what a lacrosse stick is,” the long time, frustrated Stealth ticket holder told me today. “I’m proud to support my team, but I was seriously embarrassed for the franchise when these guys came out. I’d say this was one of the worst marketing ideas the team has had, but I guess they’d actually have to have some sort of marketing plan in order to rank this idea somewhere. This went beyond missing the mark.”
For those in Toronto that have ever complained about Two for the Show, you guys should go up to those two the next time you see them and give them a long, sensual French kiss (apparently Lauren says it’s not as bad as you’d think and is actually extremely addictive) as the ultimate sign of gratitude for their work.
Anyways, maybe it’s just me, but I don’t see the correlation between hip hop and box lacrosse in today’s game. Great to support kids staying in school, but seriously, WTF?!?!
“I’d rather have the woman that sang the National Anthem come out two more times than listen to that noise again,” said the California lacrosse diehard, who couldn’t even talk to his friend beside him cuz he said the music was beyond deafening.
I hope this was a wait and see kinda year for the new ownership with the Stealth, cuz there needs to be a serious turnaround from a business standpoint if things are gonna get any better for this team, which is a damn shame cuz Walt has the boys playing some amazing lacrosse this year. And to the faithful that show up and scream their a$$es off for this team, keep it up guys, cuz the players can hear ya loud and clear. They can also hear the toilet flushing when they’re on the floor from the second floor stands, but apparently the same could be said in Albany, so why worry, right?
