Jacobs, Shamrox find new NLL life

Losing 7 of your first 8 games isn’t the kind of momentum you want to start the National Lacrosse League season. That’s a pretty big hole for any club to climb out of, but you gotta admire the Chicago Shamrox and the way they’re responding.

As dim as the club’s playoff chances are, the Shammies refuse to tank their season. As evidence is a two-game winning streak, including a stunning road win in Rochester against the defending champ Rochester Knighthawks. How’d it happen? Well, a lot of fingers are pointing to Cody Jacobs, whose got 4 games under his belt this season with Chicago after a contract holdout at the start of this season kept him sunk pretty low on the depth chart. An injury to Chris Panos opened the door for Jacobs and dude’s now got 16 points in 4 games, including 11 goals. Six of those goals came last week in a 15-10 win over Minnesota and it ups the Chicago record to 3-7.

“He’s proved in the four games he’s played that he deserves to be in the lineup,” Chicago coach Jamie Batley told the Canadian Press as the Shamrox get ready for Friday night’s game against the visiting Philadelphia Wings.

Those six goals last week was enough to earn Jacobs NLL Player of the Week honors and while he’s new to the floor this season, he’s no secret anymore. “We’ve got our hands full,” Wings coach Dave Huntley says of Chicago’s second-year pro.
