NLL playoff urgency is more than welcome in Edmonton

The West is the place to be this week, it seems. There’s a TON of news comin’ outta there this week and it’s enough to make yer fragile head spin. Whether you’re talkin’ about Philadelphia’s Athan Iannucci and his shot at breaking the National Lacrosse League’s single-season goals record as his team travels West, the provincial war of words between the Rush and the Roughnecks, the legit playoff run by the Rush, or the rumors that the Roughnecks have an eye on Dallas as a new home, the conversation wanders like Ted Jenner’s brain at the buffet line.

So I feel kinda like the dealer in a card game. Pick a topic, any topic. What’s that? The Rush? What about ‘em? Isn’t that the team that broke outta the gate with an 0-6 start? You betcha, but today it’s the team that has won 4 of its last 5 games since bringing in a new coach and GM. Hey San Jose … what’s that warm air you’re feelin’ behind you? It’s the Rush breathing down your neck and you better recognize, because if Edmonton beats Calgary on Saturday night, your game on Sunday against Edmonton could very well be for second place in the West Division and a home playoff game.

“Honestly, we’ve been in the playoffs the last four weeks,” said Bob Hamley, Edmonton’s new coach/GM who is responsible for the turnaround. “We have to play playoff-style lacrosse, and we have to play with urgency.”

Playoff urgency? That’s a welcome scenario for just about any team in Edmonton these days, as Dan Barnes points out in today’s Edmonton Journal. Especially with the late play of the CFL’s Eskimos and NHL’s Oilers.

So what about all that other news comin’ out of the West? Pick a topic … any topic, and we’ll address Alberta’s war of words in more depth a little later today:
