Top 10 NLL Rookies: Week 16
Crazy action in the NLL all season, and thought it would make sense to add some new blood to the Top 10 NLL Rookie Rankings this week, with only two more weekends to go before the post-season hits.
In Week 16, three new players crack your Top 10 in the 8-10 spots.
1 (1) Jordan Hall, New York – Is the odds on favorite for Rookie of the Year with another solid performance last week, including four helpers. NY head coach Adam Mueller has suggested he wants Hall to shoot more and praises him for not having bad shifts. 20 goals, 58 points, 94 gbs, 13gp.
2 (2) Craig Point, Minnesota – Has been struggling to find the back of the net recently with just one goal in each of his last three games. His great start still has him in contention to win this year’s Rookie of the year award. 24 goals, 54 points, 67 gbs, 13gp.
3 (3) Bobby McBride, Chicago – Another big weekend pushing the break and giving their O the ball with plenty of time left on the 30. After scoring the OT game winner in Week 15, set up the game tying goal to force OT last week. Also had another game-high 12 gbs.
4 (4) Tyler Codron, Portland – Got the assignment to guard Athan Iannucci last week. When he was D-ed up on him, Iannucci looked to be a little flustered and wasn’t as effective. Nooch did score six but Codron can’t be faulted for those. The best pure rookie defenseman this season.
5 (6) Kyle Ross, Minnesota – Keep getting great reports from scouts on Ross’ play. Pretty consistent performer and solid at the back end. Think there are some others waiting to grab this spot though as the next defender on the list.
6 (7) Merrick Thomson, Philadelphia – Too streaky. Had nine points two weekends ago, wasn’t noticeable on Friday vs. Portland then picked up five points on Saturday. He’s got talent though and lots of it. 25 goals, 49 points, 52 gbs, 13gp
7 (5) Brandon Swamp, Buffalo – Didn’t play again in a Buffalo loss. As noted last week, the Bandits’ have won their last five with Swamp in the line-up. Provides a threat in transition and is athletic out the back-end.
8 (NR) Frank Resetarits, San Jose – SJ’s strategy of trying to develop young talent may pay off down the stretch. Resetarits and rookie forward Tom Johnson combined for 10 points in their win last weekend, and rookie defenders Paul Dawson and Steve Panarelli looked good as well.
9 (NR) Mike Carnegie, Calgary – A decent all-around defenseman, Carnegie picked up a career high three assists and seven ground balls in a dominant Calgary win last weekend.
10 (NR) Jim Borell, Philadelphia – Had a great performance against Portland really showing athleticism. Philly entered the season with seven rookies on their roster and Borell has quietly developed into a solid contributor.
Out
NR (8) Jaime Rooney, Philadelphia – Has a knack for scoring clutch goals, and is able to spark the team with great hustle.
NR (9) Mitch Belisle, New York – Great reports on Belisle but Carnegie deserved some ink.
NR (10) Pete Jacobs, Portland – Talented, just so young. Fellow rookie Cory Conway is a big body that’s able to help create space for DDD, and is close to cracking the list again.
