Will the REAL Knighthawks please stand up?
So, the Knighthawks will be boarding a plane either tonight or first thing tomorrow morning headed to MSP - Minneapolis Airport. My question is “Which team is boarding that plane?”
Is it the team we’ve seen the past two weeks that went into a hostile Air Canada Centre and swaggered out with a well-earned 9-6 efficient victory, then redeemed their worst loss of the year, a 14-9 decision to Buffalo, by beating them 11-6 at the Barn Down by the River? Or, God forbid, is it the team that began this National Lacrosse League not being advised that it wasn’t 2007 anymore, and needing 7 in Philly and 9 in Minny just to make the losing scores respectable?
For those of us that live, sleep and breath the Rochester Knighthawks, we are on bended knee this week hoping for Option A.
In our corner is the fact that Minny needed a herculian effort to drive Philly into the loss column last week at home and that could be the kink in the armor that the Knighthawks needed exposed. Minny is reminiscent of the Knighthawks offense last year and Dewey Jacobs knows Rochester well, even though most of the faces have changed from his playing days. Minny may be without Ryan Sharp due to a game misconduct against Philly, but Rochester seemingly is injury free although several players are working through injuries.
As they say “There is no tomorrow” for the Knighthawks. They have put themselves in a hole this season by losing 4 one-goal contests. Sometimes they have looked awesome, like rolling Toronto 11-4, Chicago 18-8 and Philly 20-12. And other times I’m sure they want to forget, such as losing to Edmonton and Chicago. The fact of the matter is that if the defending NLL champions want a chance to defend their title, there is no choice. The ball must be shared, the defensive assignments must be shared, the accountability must be shared and by all means the trust must be shared.
Here is to hoping the veterans in that Knighthawks locker room are reminding the rest exactly what it means to pull that jersey over your head and look down at that Rochester on the front and forget the letters on the back. This is your watch gentlemen. What you do with it falls entirely on your shoulders.
Brockport Country Club called me this week and asked when I wanted to book my first tee time of the season. I told them May 19th, don’t make me regret that.
