Bandits eye NLL’s top prize

Don’t remind Darris Kilgour and the Buffalo Bandits what they’ve been lacking for the last 12 seasons. They know.

It’s not talent, or heart, or character. It’s not offense, defense or transition. It’s not even a winning tradition. The Bandits command respect, on the road or at home, but there’s still that one big hole to fill. One big void: A National Lacrosse League championship.  “The last two or three years, winning the championship is all we’ve talked about from the opening of the pre-season,” Kilgour says in this Canadian Press story. “It’s not, ‘Let’s make it to the championship game.’ We’ve done that.”

This is the mindset that Bandits bring into the playoffs as the East Division champion and top overall seed. They’ve done what they need to do to make their road to a title as smooth as can be, and their drive to the club’s first NLL title since 1996 starts Friday night against the Philadelphia Wings. “For everybody on the team, (not winning) the championship has been a monkey on our backs,” Kilgour says. “It’s something everybody on our team has thought about for a long time.”
