Toth’s got Riggers on a roll

Remember back in February, when Calgary Roughnecks coach Troy Cordingley stunned just about everybody and benched gunner Kaleb Toth for a game?

Yeah, that wasn’t a pretty moment in the 2008 season for the franchise and it’s one they’d all like to put behind them. Thing is, with the way Toth’s playing these days, he’s making that forgetting part a lot easier on everyone. The Roughnecks are riding the momentum of a four-game win streak into this weekend’s West division final against the Portland LumberJax, and Toth is a big reason for the streak. The right-hander’s got nine goals in his last four games, but being the humble superstar that he his, Toth’s talking about the shots he missed rather than the shots he cashed. “I thought I probably could have had two or three more goals,” he tells the Calgary Sun. “I got robbed on a breakaway, and there were two or three good shots (Gee Nash) stopped.”

We’re all our own toughest critics, eh? Toth’s tough on himself, but that’s precisely the kinda outlook that’s put him position he’s in as one of the game’s best. And it’s also the kind of outlook that helps lead a team like the Roughnecks right into the position they’re in today: staring a shot at the title-game right in the face.
