A lacrosse related death has grabbed headlines across the country this morning, after 15-year-old Toronto Beaches prospect Jamieson Kuhlmann succumbed to what appear to be head and neck injuries sustained in a field lacrosse game this past Monday evening.

The game was being played in Newmarket against Mississuaga. Kuhlmann had dished off a pass and was hit by an opposing player just minutes into the first quarter. Reports indicate that both players connected with each-other in the shoulder, neck and head area. Kuhlmann dropped to the ground where he told the team trainer he wasn’t feeling well.

Immidieately after speaking to the trainer, Kuhlmann apparently fell into unconsciousness and was rushed to a hospital within the city. He was later transferred to the highly respected and world renowned Hospital for Sick Kids in downtown Toronto, where the decision to take him off life support was made yesterday afternoon.

In a statement made via a family spokesperson, Jamieson’s parents stressed that their son’s death was a result of an accident and felt no ill will towards the player that checked him.

“They want the message to be clear that Jamieson died as the result of an accident. The boy that hit him, it wasn’t his fault. They really believe it’s an accident and there is nothing else than a tragedy,” said Peter Gibson, a longtime family friend and also Kuhlmann’s trainer on the Beaches team.

Kuhlmann, who had recently made the decision to attend The Hill Academy, run in part by the Merrill family, will be laid to rest on Monday at a private funeral. On Tuesday, there will be a celebration of Jamieson’s life at the Balmy Beach Club.
