What to Watch this Weekend

Even though games up here in the Great White North are played all through the week, we wanna hook ya up with the games on the weekend that you mighta wanna checkout if you’re in and around the area. The BCJALL has their top dawgs locking horns again this weekend. Some pretty big dances in Ontario junior too.

Anyways, here’s a rundown of this weekend’s top games, and why you should get up off your ass and go check ‘em out…

Saturday June 14

Akwesasne Indians @ Burlington Chiefs
Ontario Junior A
Central Arena in Burlington, Ontario - 7PM EST

The Indians and Chiefs are two of the hottest teams in junior ball right now and both have a real good chance of taking one of those first four spots in the province before the regular season ends. Burlington is coming off a war of a game against the Orangeville Northmen in mid-week, a game many are calling one of the best games of the summer already. Akwesasne on the other hand is riding a three game winning streak after getting dumped by St. Kitts 7-1, outscoring opponents by a pretty ridiculous 35-16 margin in that span. Can Gary Muzzin hold off the high scoring Thompson bros? Can Danny McRae shutdown National Junior Player of the Year candidate Kyle Buchanan? Can Akwesasne’s pretty impressive D (of late), snap Kevin Brownell’s eight game scoring streak? This one looks like it will be a real beauty, plus how can you turn down free dawgs and Coke at the BMLA’s tailgate before the game?

New Westminster Salmonbellies @ Victoria Shamrocks
BCJALL
Bear Mountain Arena in Victoria, BC - 5:00PM PST

Can it get any bigger than this one this weekend? The Bellies and ‘Rocks are both hot on the heels of first place Coquitlam and both playing really good ball of late. The two sit four and five in the National JR A Ranking and depending on what Coquitlam does against Burnaby tomorrow night, either could leap frog ‘em in the rankings with a win here. You’ve got two of the best tenders in the country goin’ at ‘er in Vic’s Matt Flindell and New West’s Sean Tessarolo. You’ve got Shamrock sniper Mike Pires heatin’ up like a lone wing in a deep fryer (man, that was a brutal simile) after comin’ back from school, with 12 points in just two games. Ditto for defender Curtis Manning for the Bellies, who’s been a force since coming back from SFU. Not only should the game itself be wicked matchup, the result means the world to both sides in the standings.

Burnaby Lakers @ Coquitlam Adanacs
WLA SR A
The Coquitlam Sports Centre in Coquitlam, BC - 7:45PM PST

At first glance, this game looked like it was probably gonna be a pretty, slightly, somewhat easy win for the 6-1-0 Coquitlam Adanacs. Especially since before last night, the Lakers had won all of a single game this year. What happened last night you ask? The Lakers dumped the Victoria Shamrocks 9-5 in a win that’s gotta have Burnaby pretty jacked for tonight’s tilt against one of this year’s other early season favorites, the A’s. The game will also give pro fans a chance to checkout Tim Campeau and Steve McKinlay, two likely first round picks in the NLL’s 2008 Entry Draft, which will take place later this summer.

Sunday June 15

Akwesasne Indians @ Six Nations Arrows
Ontario Junior A
Iroquois Lacrosse Arena in Hagersville, Ontario - 4PM EST

As important as the Indians’ first match this weekend against Burlington is, this one will mean even more if they can pull out the W. The Arrows dummied up Peterborough in their first match out after the Northmen loss and will no doubt wanna come out firing against the third place Indians to show the rest of Ontario that the ILA is still the toughest barn to grab a win in in the province. With two wins this weekend, the Indians could end up being just a point back of the Arrows and even three points behind league leading Orangeville. It’s the most important weekend in Akwesanse’s 2008 season.

Coquitlam Adanacs @ Burnaby Lakers
BCJALL
Bill Copeland Arena in Burnaby, BC - 7:00PM PST

It’s the second half of the Big Four pair-off this weekend, and it could be the best battle anywhere in Canada once Monday rolls around. Burnaby desperately needs two points comin’ outta this game. After that sh** kicking they took against Victoria last week, they’ll wanna prove that they can still hang around with the big boys with a W against the Adanacs. The Lakers are also fresh off a sh** kicking of their own, spakin’ PoCo on Friday night 10-2. Riley Loewen continues to not only give Alex Gajic a hand on O, but with 10 goals in his last three games, Loewen has been leadin’ the pack as Burnaby tries to crack the top shelf of the standings again. And with Coquitlam barely hangin’ on in their W over Delta this week, the first place Adanacs will need a stronger showing against the Lakers.
