Lazy Sunday? Not exactly. Read on for the whats, whens and wheres of the biggest games going.
RMLL
Edmonton Eclipse @ Calgary Jr. A Mountaineers
Sunday, June 22nd, 3:30 PM MST, South Fish Creek Arena
Sure, it may not be the Oilers against the Flames in an NHL showdown but it is the best Alberta has to offer. With the Mountaineers hosting the Minto Cup in the upcoming weeks and the Edmonton Eclipse sitting in first place, this will likely be a preview of Alberta’s contributions to the Canadian Junior A championship. The Eclipse are coming off a big win over the Sr. B Mountaineers and hope to keep the wins coming. The rough and tough Eclipse will need to call on keeper Kyle Kowalchuk who has yet to let them down thus far. This battle for Alberta is not one to be missed.
Ontario Jr. A
Orangeville Northmen @ Akwesasne Indians
Sunday, June 22nd, 4:00 PM EST, Awkwarnaro Arena
While it may be a little early to expect Stephen Keogh and Todd Hosmer in the Orangeville line-up, the Northmen have at least 27 other reasons for you to sit up and pay attention. Matt McLeod, Jon Harnett, Nick Rose, the list is long and impressive. With a big trade in the books and first place with their name on it, all eyes are on Orangeville as they seemingly storm towards an Ontario Championship and Minto Cup berth. However, the Akwesasne Indians aren’t about to hand the Northmen their 14th win of the season. With Kyle Buchanan and a triumvirate of Thompsons, the Indians will be looking to snag their tenth win and gain a step on Peterborough in the tight Ontario standings.
MSL
Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks @ Peterborough Lakers
Sunday, June 22nd, 7:00 PM EST, Peterborough Memorial Centre
Both teams waltz into this game with something to smile about. After the resolution of a sticky holdout situation, sparkplug Shawn Evans will make his debut against the Kodiaks, who are coming off an emotional 8-7 victory over the first place Brampton Excelsiors in the closing seconds of Thursday night. Evans, who will be joining his brother Scott Evans who is second on the team in points with 22, already has two Manns and two Mintos under his belt including the 2006 Minto MVP honor. While third place KW racked up their second victory over the Excelsiors on the season, they still trail Brampton by six points for the top of the league. The Lakers hope to gain ground on KW and move out of a three way tie with Brooklin and Barrie for fourth and continue to keep their “drive for five” dream alive and well. The young Kodiak arsenal, anchored by Ryan Benesch and Kevin Ross, will be anything but soft on the Laker defense.
BCJALL
Victoria Shamrocks @ New Westminster Salmonbellies
Sunday June 22nd, 5:00 PM PST, Queens Park Arena
If it weren’t for Coquitlam’s tremendous play all season, these two clubs would be battling it out for first place. Nonetheless, anytime these guys can get a game up on one another it’s just as crucial. It’s been eight days since their last meeting in Bear Mountain Arena where the ‘Rocks downed the ‘Bellies 10-7 in an OT thriller. Heading into extra time knotted at sevens, Victoria shelled keeper Sean Tessarolo with three goals on six shots including two scores from Myles Kenny. This contest showcases three of the top points scorers in the BCJALL in Victoria’s Cayle Ratcliff (55) and New West’s Kyle Belton (51) and Alex Turner (51). With only a handful of games left during the regular season and the ‘Bellies hoping to bounce back from last weeks heart breaker, it doesn’t get much better than this.
If you’re (unfortunately) nowhere near an arena today, be sure to tune in to the Junior Adanacs website to catch Coquitlam taking on the Nanaimo Timbermen at 5:00 PM PST live via webcast.
