WLA: Fight for playoff seeds

The New Westminster Salmonbellies (10-0) continue to roll through the Western Lacrosse Association (WLA). They remain the only undefeated team in the country and a top the CLA Power Rankings. But Shanny says don’t be surprised if they drop a game this week.

The Salmonbellies won last week with close wins over Coquitlam and Burnaby by scores of 10-8 and 8-7 respectively. They play just one game this week - in Coquitlam. It’s the third and final meeting between the WLA’s top two teams this regular season.

The Coquitlam Adanacs (7-3) currently sit in second place in the league ahead of Victoria (5-3) and Burnaby (4-5-1). The top four teams during the regular season will make the two round best-of-seven series playoffs.

And while the New West-Coquitlam game may be a battle for first-place and post-season confidence, bigger games this week are on tap between those teams still fighting for a playoff seed.

Nanaimo (2-7-1) sits in fifth-place with a game in-hand on Langley (2-7) and Maple Ridge (2-7) as we enter the back half of the 2008 WLA regular season.

For the young Langley Thunder, it’s an opportunity to prove they belong with an ‘08 playoff seed. They face the third and fourth place teams in the league, starting tonight with a home game in Langley and huge game at Burnaby on Friday.

The Thunder enter this week with three recent one goal loses, two at the hands of the Nanaimo Timberman, who also came within one goal of beating the number one ranked New Westminster Salmonbellies two weekends ago.

Nanaimo plays Maple Ridge this week. The Maple Ridge Burrards will also play on the Island Friday against Victoria in a big weekend for them as well.

The race for available WLA playoffs seeds is still wide open, but this weekend should definitely help define who’s in and who’s out.

Here’s a look at your complete WLA schedule for the week:
