The Arizona Sting were one of the league’s more successful teams on the floor, but struggled at the box office ‘going dark’ in 2008 before deciding to completely suspend operations in 2009 after the franchises was on the market for several months.

Arizona and Boston both used a nine-day work stoppage caused by Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) negotiations as an excuse to ‘go dark’ in 2008. (On Oct. 16th, the league cancelled its 2008 season when a deadline to reach a new CBA with the player’s association was not met. On Oct. 24, a new seven-year CBA was reached.)

The clubs were provided with the option to re-enter in 2009 by participating in an Expansion Draft or to receive back their rostered players from 2008. Arizona chose to reclaim their dispersed players for the 2009 season, while Boston was allowed another Expansion Draft. Boston players selected in last year’s Dispersal Draft have remained with their current clubs.

Boston was awarded a new NLL franchise in May of last year, after a 10-year hiatus from the league. The NLL held its initial Expansion Draft for the club on July 31, 2007. Partick Merrill was taken No. 1 overall by Boston and then selected with the No. 2 overall pick by New York in last year’s two-team Dispersal Draft. No date has been provided yet for the Boston Blazers new Expansion Draft.

The NLL Entry Draft was held on Sept. 1 last year and is expected to be held around the same time this year. Jordan Hall was the No. 1 overall selection to the New York Titans in 2008.
