Who Cashed in on the Sting Fallout?

Now that that second Arizona Sting Dispersal Draft is past us, we can kinda get a handle on who actually benefited from their misfortunes the most.
What team was able to cash in and improve their roster the most from the Sting closing up shop?
28 players were directly or indirectly affected by the Sting Dispersal’s, plus close to ten Entry Draft picks over the next two years traded hands via a trade of a Sting ball player. That’s a lotta roster spots.
It was the fourth time Bruce Codd had been taken by someone in a dispersal. Ottawa took him in the ‘02 Montreal Express Dispersal Draft, New York a year later in the Ottawa Rebel Dispersal and then the two times he got taken by Calgary in the double Sting fire sale.
Other guys in this year’s draft have been moved on dispersal draft days before too. Craig Conn was taken by Minny when Vancouver closed up shop, ditto for Bruce Murray and Chris McKay, who went to Anaheim and Rochester respectively that year. Hell, this last one technically marked Conn’s fifth stop in an NLL city (Vancouver, Minnesota, Arizona, Buffalo and Toronto), that now sees him in Toronto after getting grabbed by the Rock on Monday afternoon.
Actually, like Codd, it was Murray’s fourth time taken in a Dispersal Draft too, the two times through the Sting Draft, the Ravens one I just mentioned and then the Anaheim Storm one too.
Scott Self and Peter Veltman were part of the Ottawa Rebel draft, so that makes three for them this past week as well.
And even though there are likely more trades coming involving a few of those Sting guys, below you can find who went where in the initial Sting Draft (held on November 5 2007) and where all those connected to the Sting Draft are as of today, July 4th.
I included pretty much everyone that was either picked up the in the draft or were part of a trade that involved either a pick in either Sting Draft or were traded for sometime after.
Did Portland make the right move in holding onto Dan Dawson, Derek Malawsky and Brad MacDonald last year? Should Chicago have got what they could have for Self, especially since they simply were able to redraft him again this past Monday?
Are Jax fans satisfied with last year’s wild ride in the post-season, which left them inches away from taking the Cup, or would they rather have traded Dawson and Malawsky last year for a first rounder over the next two years, landing maybe a guy like Daryl Veltman, Tim Campeau, Rhys Duch, Jamie Floris, Sid Smith, Garrett Billings, Corey Small, Cody Jamieson, Zack Greer, etc… the list could go on-and-on, especially when you see how deep next year’s first two rounds should be.
Or were moves like Chicago made when they sent Lindsay Plunkett to Edmonton, getting a couple of third rounders for him last year before he went back in limbo, the better move?
Maybe the most interesting deal was the one that saw Chris Seller go from Edmonton to Calgary and then back to Edmonton this past week. Cuz after all is said and done, the Rush end up scoring Seller and Calgary’s 2008 third round pick in the Entry Draft, while the Necks now have nothing to show for landing Seller in that early season trade this past winter. Was it luck on Edmonton’s part or a shrewed roster move?
In the chart below, also included are guys like Cam Woods, Matt Disher, Matt King and Kevin Fines. None of the four played for the Sting, but were part of substantial moves that only went down cuz an aforementioned Sting player was part of the swap.
Not included in the chart is what teams gave up for the guys they have in their July 4th column (mainly cuz I totally ran outta room), but if you back-track the deals, you’ll be able to connect the dots pretty easily. If you still can’t figure it out, hit up the league’s transaction page for both 2008 and 2007.
