ILF 2008 U-19 World Games: Germany first in Red Division
Germany moved into first-place in Red Division with a 15-7 win over Bermuda on Saturday.
“I think people are pretty amazed,” said Germany head coach John Pirie of his team’s undefeated start.
“We came here as a country that had never won a game at the international U19 level. Realistically we hoped to come here and win a game. To find ourselves on top of the heap at 3-0 after three days is pretty much a dream come true for these kids.”
Germany defeated Wales and then convincingly beat Scotland and Bermuda to move to 3-0, first in the Red Division. Scotland and Bermuda, two first-time programs in the tourney, will play Sunday at 11:15am PST for second place in the Division and opportunity to compete in the medal round.
“The boys are raising the standard every time they get on the field they’re playing better and better lacrosse. And I think they’ve opened a lot of eyes around the tournament,” added Pirie.
Lacrosse has experienced exponential growth in Germany over the last decade and the program currently has four men’s leagues around the country plus events like the annual Berlin Open.
Selecting German players for the team involved a series of five open camps over nine months with over sixty players attending and learning the game, as management wanted to use the tryouts to develop lacrosse as well as select a team.
“Everyday has just been an amazing part of a dream for these kids,” concluded Pirie. “I think they’ll never forget this experience that’s for sure.”
