New West takes 1-0 lead in series with Timbermen

Every team wants to get off on the right foot at the beginning of the playoffs, and a 16-7 win in the first game of a five-game series is a good way to do it. Last night the New Westminster Salmonbellies stretched their 16 goals out over all three periods—scoring six in both the first and second and four in the third—and held off a second period six-goal surge from the Timbermen for the lopsided win.
Alex Turner exploded for five goals and one assist while Jason Jones and Kyle Belton snapped in three goals apiece. In addition to making 32 saves, allowing just one goal in the first and shutting out the third, New West goaltender Sean Tessarolo pitched in with two assists. The New West offense fired off a total of 50 shots. Colton Clark and Joel Pelletier had two goals each for the Timbermen.
The two teams meet again tonight at 5:00 PM PST at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. In other playoff action, the Burnaby Lakers host the Port Coquitlam Saints tonight at 7:00 PM PST at the Bill Copeland Arena.
