Ugly Game 1 likely sparks end for Moxam this season

In the aftermath of an ugly Game 1 between the St. Catharines Athletics and KW Braves, which saw Braves’ defender and assistant captain, Craig Zeeh, sustain a slight concussion during the A’s 6-4 win, it appears that referee Tom Moxam, the man many point to for a lot of the confusion and ugliness stemming from the opening round game, will not be used for the remainder of the series and likely the rest of the Junior A post-season altogether.

Sources tell NLL Insider that a decision not to use Moxam for any remaining games would likely have been made by the Ontario Lacrosse Referees Association, a governing body Moxam also serves as an executive on.

The incident in question occurred during Monday night’s Game 1 at Bill Burgoyne Arena in St. Catharines. In the third period, with the Athletics holding down a 5-4 lead halfway through the frame, it looked as if Zeeh had scored a tying goal after transitioning the ball out of his own end. Initially it appeared that Moxam signaled a goal with no questions asked. Shortly after though, Moxam would then wave-off the goal, giving possession to the A’s, with St. Catharines’ Corey Small scoring immidiately after the KW “non-goal”.

It then appeared that Zeeh attempted to run over to Moxam, but also ran through the A’s on-floor celebration after Small’s goal. From there, all hell broke loose with a brawl erupting which saw a total of 104 combined penalty minutes handed out to the two teams.

The incident included, what the KW Record describes as, “… St. Catharines’ Joel McCready mercilessly punch a fallen Zeeh. A dazed Zeeh crawled to the bench and was taken to hospital after the game.”

Due to Zeeh’s concussion, he is not expected to be in the Braves’ lineup for Game 2.

The two teams resume their series tonight at Bill Burgoyne Arena (8PM EST) with St. Catharines leading 1-0. Games three and four are in K-W on Friday (8PM EST) and Sunday (7PM EST) at the Waterloo Memorial Rec Centre.
