Walt Christianson released, Jeff Dowling hired in San Jose

In the wake of today’s announcemnt from the San Jose Stealth, who relieved Head Coach Walt Christianson after three year’s of service with the franchise, NLL Insider has learned from several sources that Jeff Dowling, current Head Coach of the Six Nations Chiefs in the MSL, will be named the Stealth’s new bench boss tomorrow.
Dowling, who’s recently spent time as the Calgary Roughnecks’ head coach in 2007 (7 games after Chris Hall firing) and was part of the Buffalo Bandits’ Champion’s Cup bench this past season, had also been recently mentioned as a potential candidate for the New Titans’ head coaching position, previous to Ed Comeau being named the franchise’s new coach last month.
The former Fergus Thistles and Brampton Excelsiors defender also recently served as the Titans’ assistant GM previous to spending time with the Calgary Roughnecks during his second stint with the team.
It’s unclear as to why the Stealth released Christianson today, but sources say that the former Mann Cup winner was extremely surprised when made aware of the franchise’s decision.
“I was committed to coaching the Stealth through the 2009 season, but I respect the team management’s decision,” said Christianson in a press release sent out earlier today. “I have truly enjoyed my three years in San Jose, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the players coaches, fans, ownership group and management.”
An official announcement on the coaching change is expected to be made tomorrow by the Stealth, who went from a 4-12 team to one that finished as the number one seed in the West this past season since Christianson took over head coaching duties from current San Jose President and GM, Johnny Mouradian, after the 2005 season.
