How Shawn Williams Saved the Day
What would have happened if Shawn Williams didn’t scored that OT goal in the 2008 All-Star game this year? I ask this question because for some reason I stayed up watching the never ending story—I mean the MLB All-Star Game. For those of you with a life or who decided to go to bed before the 4 hour and 50 minutes game ended, the American League won 4-3 in 15 innings. A game that was coming dreadfully close to stalemate yet again, much like the 2002 All-Star game did, to the horror of baseball fans world wide.
So what would the NLL do? It’s not like the teams would run out of roster sports like they could in baseball. But, what if Colorado GM Steve Govett came down to the bench and told West head coach Bob Hamley that he didn’t want Gee Nash to see more the 40 minutes of action. For the record, some of the GM’s strictly told the All-Star managers to avoid playing their pitchers if they could at all costs. Would the NLL continue the game if they ran out of goalies to use?
What would have happened if Willy hadn’t scored that goal? I highly doubt Commissioner Jim Jennings would have let the game end in a tie, so they probably would have played another OT then the possibility of a shoot-out I’d imagine. But seriously, I don’t really think that’s a thought that comes across too many peoples minds during a lacrosse game; ‘Hmm I wonder if, over the course of a 10 minute OT, any one of our elite stars will be able to score….oh crap, if nobody scores what the hell are we gonna do?’ Seriously though! How much are those MLB guys getting paid and they can’t score a run? Sure they are facing the top pitchers in the game but isn’t that what they get paid to do.
One of these days they are going to have to realize that they go through more pitchers than they do guys who play first base and start adding more pitchers to the rosters. Well I know Red Sox and American League Manager Terry Francona said that if needed they would have put J.D Drew in at pitcher, but come on, really? That would be like putting Mark Steenhuis in net!
A lot of people were complaining about this years NLL All-Star game, I still don’t understand that BUT, there is never the chance it will end in a tie. Now don’t get me wrong I’m not saying the MLB All-Star game wasn’t exciting but, even Dan Uggla (yes that’s his name) was doing everything he could to end the game as he booted three balls in extra innings in the process setting a record for most errors by a single player in a game!
All-Star games are meant to be fun, lighthearted and enjoyable for the fans, showcasing the skills of their favourite players. But by the time the game had ended, a lot of the fans had left already! Here’s my solution, first off, have the game on the weekend! Don’t award the winning league home field advantage for the World Series. That should go to the best team still in the play-offs. Finally, if by some chance it’s still tied and there are no more pitchers or position players to be used, just have a bench clearing brawl and see who wins!
