Canadian Women’s Lacrosse – Open Tryouts
The Canadian Women’s National Lacrosse Team will be holding an open tryout August 1-3 at Harvard University.
Athletes who have a Canadian affiliation are eligible to try out for the team, which will compete at the International Federation of Women’s Lacrosse Associations (IFWLA) World Cup in Prague, Czech Republic in June 2009.
Those interested in trying out can register on the official Web site of the Canadian Women’s Lacrosse National Team Program at www.teamcanadawomenslacrosse.com.
Lisa Miller, also head coach at Harvard University, will led the Canadian coaching staff alongside assistants Amy Bokker, head coach at Stanford University, and Patty Kloidt, head coach at Hamilton College.
Canada’s Women’s team is not yet the skilled force that many are used to with the Canadian Men’s or U-19 men’s programs. With international play at the Women’s level, the big rivalry is United States versus Australia.
At the last IFWLA championship in 2005, Australia denied the United States its fifth-straight IFWLA World Cup by defeating the States 14-7 in the gold medal game in front of 6000 fans. England captured bronze with an 11-8 win over Canada.
The win gave Australia its second World Cup championship.
Canada has participated in every World Cup in the 27-year history of the event. Their best finish has been a bronze medal.
Currently, 15 member nations comprise the IFWLA. The IFWLA World Cup competitions have been held every fourth year since 1982 in a different host country.
If you are interested in trying out for a spot on Canada’s team, be sure to look into attending the open tryout. The ‘09 IFWLA website is still in development.
