MSL semifinals: locked and loaded
St. Regis and Brooklin each did what they wanted in the Major Series Lacrosse first round and now it’s time for a game of hurry up and wait.

Brooklin swept Kitchener-Waterloo with Saturday’s 9-5 victory, and St. Regis wrapped up its series Sunday afternoon with an 11-9 decision over Six Nations. The Redmen and the Indians each know who they’re playing in the semifinals, they’re just not sure when. As the No. 4 seed, Brooklin will play top-seeded Brampton and as the No. 3 seed, St. Regis will knock heads with No. 2 Peterborough. The Redmen are gonna have their hands full playing a Brampton squad that’s unbeaten on the road this season won the season series, 3-0, between the teams, while the Indians take on a Lakers squad that won 2 of its 3 regular-season matchups against St. Regis.
On Sunday, St. Regis found itself faced with a gut-check. Trailing 7-4 in the second period and 7-6 heading into the third, the Indians poured it on. Pat Maddalena’s goal with 12:31 left in regulation tied the game, 7-7, and Steve Toll put St. Regis ahead for good at 6:22. Mark Steenhuis led the winners with 3 goals and 3 assists, while Mike Accursi scored twice.
Now the Indians will look to keep that momentum rolling against the Lakers, who notched victories of 12-11 and 11-9 in the final two regular-season matchups between these clubs. The Indians topped Peterborough 9-5 in their first matchup.
Brampton, meanwhile, cruised in its three wins over Brooklin in the regular season. And in a weird twist, the Excelsiors may even offer to play this series in its entirety on the road. All three of Brampton’s losses in the regular season came at home and the club didn’t lose a game on the road all season. Of course, there was the 10-10 tie at Peterborough, but there’s no denying the impressive feat of an unbeaten road record in the regular season. The Excelsiors beat Brooklin in all three meetings this summer: 15-6, 14-8 and 13-6.
