CLA Power Rankings: Week 10

The preliminary playoff round is over in the OLA playoffs so we are down to the final four and in a few days the WLA regular season will end so we’ll be down to the final four out there as well. Maybe the WLA should also consider adding a preliminary round in the future because it would at least give some drama and hope for the bottom three teams who have been “out of it” for weeks, if not months. At least we still have a battle for 3rd place. With 1 game left in the season, Burnaby is one point ahead of Victoria. I know regular season games does not always correspond to playoff outcomes but still, if I was Burnaby or Victoria I would like my chances better by avoiding New West in the first round. The Lakers and the Shamrocks lost every game against the Bellies and each team was embarrassed in their last game against New West (15-6, 13-5). On the other hand, Burnaby and Victoria have each competed well against Coquitlam.

In the East the Brampton Excelsiors will meet Brooklin, who swept Kitchener in three while Peterborough meets St. Regis who took out Six Nations in four (after losing the opener). Again you have to remember that playoffs are new season but I still don’t give Brooklin much of a chance against Brampton. Under coach Peter Vipond, the Redmen are the most improved team in the league but they still have not matched up well against the vastly more experienced Excelsiors. Brampton will take this in 5. The other semifinal should be much tougher. This is the best team St. Regis (Akwasasne) has ever put together but Peterborough has reassembled their Mann Cup team. And remember the Lakers did not have Shawn Evans last year. I’ll take the Lakers in a hard fought 6 games.

Team Record This Week Last Week comment
New WestminsterSalmonbellies 16-1 1 1 One game left (against Maple Ridge) before playoffs. Their only concern for that game is to come out of it healthy.
Brampton Excelsiors 14-3-1 2 2 They will be in the finals but must deal with Brooklin first.
Peterborough Lakers 12-5-1 3 3 Lakers don’t get a chance to ease into the playoffs with difficult first round match up against John Tavares and St. Regis.
Coquitlam Adanacs 13-3-2 4 4 Will start playoffs against either Victoria or Burnaby. Both teams have played the Adanacs tough this season.
St. Regis Indians 11-7 5 5 Playoff match up against Peterborough is their chance to prove they are one of the best.
Burnaby Lakers 8-7-2 6 7 A win against Langley will ensure first round match up against Coquitlam.
Victoria Shamrocks 8-8-1 7 6 Were beaten by New West 13-4 last week. Hoping they can overtake Burnaby this week so they can match up against Coquitlam first round.
Brooklin Redmen 7-11 8 8 Handled Kitchener easily (3 straight) but are major underdogs against Brampton.
Six Nations Chiefs 5-12-1 9 10 Played well but not good enough to overcome the talent laden St.Regis Indians.
Kitchener Kodiaks 6-10-2 10 9 Disappointing finish (swept by Brooklin) for young team that had a great first half to the regular season.
Barrie Lakeshores 5-12-1 11 11 Season over.
Maple Ridge Burrards 5-12 12 12 Last game of 2008 against New Westminster.
Nanaimo Timbermen 4-12-1 13 13 Can spoil third place for Victoria with a win in their last game.
Langley Thunder 3-14 14 14 Season started with high hopes. Can end it on positve note if they can beat Burnaby in a game with playoff implications.
