7 games in 11 days!
So there I sat, immersed in a bowl of 5-spice Edamame beans from The Local Kitchen (my favorite restaurant in Victoria), enjoying my ritualistic night before game meal when the bartender, a buddy of his and I got onto the topic of sports. The buddy had mentioned he played rugby and the bartender said he ‘would never put his body through that’! I had to agree with him. Rugby players are some of the toughest athletes out there and I have a ton of respect for them and no way would I want to be at the bottom of one of those rucks! So the friend asked me what sport i played and I said I played lacrosse for the Shamrocks. Almost immediately he shot back with, ‘I’d never put my body through that!’ I laughed but thought to myself, ‘man, if rugby guys think that about us, hell we must be doing something right’!
To prove my point, look no further than the schedule of our WLA play-off opening round series. Still undecided of who we are playing, we will start with game one on the road Tuesday August 5th. Then it’s every other night for 11 nights! I know they need to get the games in so they can start the MANN Cup on time but seriously? That’s almost half a season in a week and half! Trust me when I say this, our bodies will be crying mercy by game 6 and if game 7 comes around, its just pure adrenaline! What worse is this would just be the Western semis! If we make it to the finals, that’s another 7 game series and in just as many nights.
If there was every a time to buy stock in Ice packs and physiotherapy, now would be the time!
When you are used to playing 2 games a week, the idea of 4 games in a week is mind numbing. No real need or time for practices or shoot arounds, just a heavy dose of ibuprofen, ice and lots of therapy. There is no real way to explain the feeling of battling it out every other night with the same team for a week straight. Going into the play-offs there is going to be some held over tension from the regular season but the play-offs always add some extra drama to the picture. The tension builds to a full boil, the idea of hating somebody to the utmost is not far from anybody’s mind and of course the chippyness will intensify to a point of no return!
We all live for the play-offs. We all dream of a chance at the MANN Cup. But man do our bodies sure wish we were able to take a break and rest before kicking the crap out of each other! I guess the one thing we have to look forward to about the next 11 days is, if we make to the big dance, it will 7 games in 9 days! MOMMMY
