Edmonton Miners win Alberta once again

Once again for the Edmonton Miners it didn’t matter that they didn’t finish first in the regular season, it didn’t matter that they were going up against a team that’s looked primed for the Minto Cup all season, and it certainly didn’t matter that they lost game one of the Alberta Jr. A finals. The perennial provincial champs—2005 being the only exception—switched into playoff mode and wiped out the Edmonton Eclipse four games to one to take top spot and earn another trip to the Minto.

After dropping game one 4-3, the Miners bounced back to take four in a row by scores of 10-3, 10-4, 7-4 and 7-2. Nate Schmidt, Kevin Wallin and Cam Ritchie came on strong in scoring for the Miners, while Dave Marrese led all goaltenders in GAA and save percentage in both the regular season and the playoffs.

The Miners won’t have far to travel for the Minto this year, with the Calgary Jr. Mountaineers hosting. Both the Ontario and B.C. representatives could be decided as early as tonight with both the Victoria Shamrocks and Six Nations Arrows heading into their games on the brink of elimination.
