Savilla Eliuk could use a little help

Even with all the rivalries between cities, the rough nature of the game, the legends about Philly fans and poor Stephen Hoar, the lacrosse community has proven itself to be one of the best time and time again and ladies and gentlemen of the lacrosse world, here’s one more chance to do so.

Savilla Eliuk is now in end-stage renal failure, which is exactly as dire as it sounds. As you sit here reading this your kidneys are likely functioning at 100%. Because of a diagnosis that came in her early 20’s and has since progressed, Savilla’s kidneys function at 4%. Even with the life-sustaining therapy of peritoneal dialysis, at their very best her kidneys achieve 14%. There is no way around it: Savilla needs a kidney transplant. Two years ago she was put on the kidney donation waiting list in British Columbia but the wait time is 8 years. In short, that is too long.

Her sister Helen went through extensive testing and though she is a match (Savilla can only receive a transplant from someone in blood group O) Helen’s blood vessels were found to be too small in the final test and as such she is not eligible to be the donor. The next best chance is Savilla’s brother Frank, but because he lives in Baltimore and his health insurance won’t cover anything to do with organ donation the family is left scrambling to pay the costs that could save Savilla’s life.

So everybody relax: I’m not about to ask you for a kidney. The first round of tests will cost $2,422.25 and I’m thinking that together the extended lacrosse family can make this happen.

Savilla’s Hope Foundation is an officially registered foundation and you can find out more about Savilla’s battle at the foundation’s website. If you can’t offer financial assistance not to worry because you can still give her your positive thoughts, and maybe take a little time to think about checking off that organ donation box.
