Curt Styres: man about town

It’s hard to instinctively like a man who lives in a 21,000 sq. foot mansion. Unless you’re trying to get invited over on Superbowl Sunday, since he does have that in-house theatre with ten reclining leather chairs. Even so, you’re a lot less likely to find yourself thinking “oh how nice for him” when you could be reminding yourself that he’s probably got a garage bigger than your entire house. But there’s a reason that today’s Democrat and Chronicle article on Mr. Curt Styres is nearly 3000 words long.

There’s the 12-foot-by-18-foot house he lived in as a child with his four siblings and mother after his father passed away in a car accident. There’s the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena he built. There’s also the school. The millions of dollars he’s pumped back into the reserve. The Six Nations Arrows Jr. A lacrosse team he purchased and revitalized. The debts he’s erased for Rochester sports, the reputations he’s repairing, the hard-line he took with Steve Donner, and a myriad of other reasons Knighthawks fans have to be excited about the future of lacrosse in Rochester.

Oh, and that orange on the new Knighthawks marketing vehicle? In honour of his Uncle Frankie, who became a fixture in Mr. Styres life after the death of his father. “He always had the big cars with the loud motors and they were always orange. From not having anything, he’d stop by, throw us into his car and take us to the track. I want to keep his colors alive.” Even more orange is set to be incorporated into the Khawks colour scheme. Future’s so bright.
