Toronto Rock set free agent camp

Yesterday the Toronto Rock announced plans for an open tryout, to be held October 19th at the Scarborough Soccer Centre. For anyone who thinks holding an open tryout is a waste of time, I have just 40 words for you: in 2006 Rob Marshall went undrafted and underrated until he walked in to a series of Toronto Rock open tryouts and beat out nearly 30 players—including Toronto’s draft picks—to become the only rookie on the roster that season.

Don’t be misled by the name open tryout, however. Not just anyone gets to show up wearing McKids jogging pants and a catcher’s mask yelling “really? You’re going to turn away the girl from NLLinsider?” Prospective Rock players 21 and over: you need to fill out an application form and wait to hear if you’re selected. If so, it’ll set you back $89. If not, at least you don’t have to go to Scarborough.
