Imagine a Paul Suggate pep talk

With the Rochester Knighthawks radio show set to debut tomorrow night you can’t help but wonder if Craig Rybczynski wishes he had some sort of time machine or gull wing sports car that would allow him to go back and interview Paul Suggate circa 1975. As the Knighthawks new head coach, Suggate has surely learned to tone down his public commentary, but back then the top-rated player in indoor lacrosse had no such qualms and in an article comparing and contrasting Suggate and John Davis, the Sports Illustrated vault has archived a few of his doozies.

On how thrilled he was about the improved play of his team:
“There’s no way I’d let one of my teammates beat me for the scoring title. If it got down to the last play of the year, and I needed to score to win, I wouldn’t let anyone shoot but me.”

The importance of camaraderie among teammates:
“I try to play the game just like him,” said rookie teammate Blair Campbell. “You can’t help but like him or learn from watching him.” And Suggate on Campbell? “I never have gotten along with Blair. He plays lousy defense.”

Maybe when you play like this (video) you get to have a mouth like that. Oh, to be a blind fly with no sense of smell on the wall of the Knighthawks dressing room this season.

  • Speaking of John Davis, turns out his on-floor prowess didn’t translate to the realm of Peterborough politics: Peterborough Examiner
