Once In A Blue Moon…
I was on my way to work the other morning and as per usually I was listening to ‘The Herd’ with Collin Cowherd (yes that’s his real name) on ESPN radio. He mentioned that on that specific night, there were no professional sporting events being played; God that got me depressed. What the hell is a sports fanatic supposed to do with himself when there are no sports to watch. Literally when I got home from work, all three major sports channels in my area, TSN, Sportsnet and The Score were all showing a poker event! AWESOME…
Thankfully, that only happens once every four months or so but man does life suck on those days. Cue the music!! The NHL regular season gets underway full steam ahead tonight; sure there were a couple Euro games last weekend, but tonight makes it officially official. There’s pretty much hockey on every night for the next 9 months or so! And invariably the start of the NHL season means one thing, LAX BABY!
That’s right folks, dust off your face paint, your jiffy markers, your giant orange wigs and your Kermit the Frog slippers cause it’s just about time for the warriors to strap on the pads and go to war.
The NLL is starting to gather some speed lately in the news and for the most part it’s all good news. The Rock and Titans are playing the first ever professional lacrosse game in Florida, where the league’s best dressed man, Kevin Finneran is trying to put together a group of investors who would be willing to bring the game down south. As soon as I heard this story, I immediately thought of Slap Shot, when the Chiefs were rumoured to be moving to the Sunshine State! What a great prospect, let’s just hope the response in January is as strong as the league hopes. If it is, you could see a lot of guys asking for trades!
The Rush are also doing their part to spread the lax gospel this year. They will be holding their opening training camp in Boise, Idaho November 13-16, with their Black vs White inter-squad game high-lighting the weekend, on the 14th. Not only is this a great move for the league but it’s a fantastic move by GM Bob Hamley. Having been a part of the early years in Rushland, one of the major things I always commented on was that there was a huge divide within the team. It always seemed to be the ‘Edmonton guys’ and then the rest of team; that is never a good way for a team to be. An early season team vacation/training camp is one of the best ways to get every on the same page and come together. I think it was the Toronto Rock that used take a team weekend and go up to some cabin for a weekend of team bonding; mentally, physically and spiritually. With the strides that Hamley has taken so far with the newest edition of the Rush, I can only believe that this opening camp road trip will be nothing but beneficial for Edmonton.
Whether its exhibition road games, team bonding trips or even team t-shirts, I expect to see a few more teams expanding themselves this preseason . Regardless, the off season is almost complete and the fun and excitement is about to begin. So no more sport-less nights are on the horizon for quite some time and the most important time for NLL teams are right around the corner; Training camp. But I don’t think too many TV stations will cover that…
