Philanthropy and the NLL

It’s looking a lot like good deed week in upstate New York, where first Knighthawks owner Curt Styres gifted a life size, custom-made lacrosse statue to the city of Rochester, followed by the announcement that Bandits owner B. Thomas Golisano laid down a $10 million donation to Niagara University. Golisano’s gift — which will support the construction of a new science centre — is reportedly the largest donation the school has ever received. Kind of makes that $4 grocery pack I bought for the Dundas food drive seem a lot less impressive now. Especially since I put it in my pantry.

So many talents, so little time: if anyone has a clear sense of direction they’d like to donate, potential Calgary Roughnecks rookie and gifted hockey blueliner Joe Vetere could probably use one.

And it’s not just Canadians who should be giving thanks this weekend. Swarm fans who have been deprived of live lacrosse for five months have a full weekend of lax activities to look forward to, courtesy of the new owners. The main event is, of course, the University of Notre Dame vs. the United States Military Academy at West Point (Army), the first ever NCAA div. I game held in the state of Minnesota, but there’s also a slew of Swarm activities including a player clinic on Saturday and a bit of a rookie workout Sunday evening.
