Jake Bergey return to Philly looks unlikely, Stroup signs, Hall retires
Sources close to the situation have confirmed with NLL Insider that the likelihood of Jake Bergey being traded back to the Philadelphia Wings after being selected by the Boston Blazers in the Expansion Draft is extremely unlikely at this point.
Bergey, whose career was resurrected last year with the Wings, was selected by the Blazers in July’s draft, with most thinking a trade back to Philly for potentially a draft pick or pair of part-time ball players would be imminent.
A similar situation had transpired during 2007’s off-season prior to Boston getting put on the shelf for the upcoming season. Bergey had again been left unprotected during the draft, was selected by the Blazers, but was then dealt back to the Wings during the Entry Draft in exchange for the Wings’ 32nd overall pick along with a conditional selection.
It’s unknown what was offered this year, but sources say that a deal between the teams sounds extremely unlikely at this point, which ultimately might lead to Bergey retiring from the league altogether.
In an interview with NLL Insider’s Lauren Ward last season, Bergey said he had expressed interest in potentially taking on a coaching role with the Wings previous to being selected by Boston, but was talked into playing another year by then new Head Coach Dave Huntley.
Here is an excerpt from that interview in regards to Bergey deciding to play another year:
I actually decided that I was going to retire and I talked to Coach Huntley about maybe helping out coaching and I guess it kind of caught him off-guard. He called me back and really talked me out of it and I’m very thankful that he did because I feel like I have a new energy and a new desire for this game.
Dan Stroup officially signs in Portland
And as NLL Insider first reported last week, the deal that was pending that would have Dan Stroup in Portland has been approved by the NLL and was made official yesterday afternoon.
Kelly Hall retires from the NLL
A move this week that caught most fans and insiders by shock was the retirement of former first rounder, Kelly Hall.
Hall started his career in San Jose, after the Stealth made the Victoria Shamrocks vet a first round choice in the 2003 Entry Draft.
Hall would later find his way to Minnesota and Portland, but probably had his most impressive season last winter playing for the Calgary Roughnecks.
“We’d love to have him back, but due to personal circumstances, Kelly has decided to hang up his jersey and retire,” said Calgary owner and GM Brad Bannister in a statement released by the franchise earlier today.
“Kelly was an integral part of our team last year, he was physical, he stuck up for his teammates and did what the coaches asked of him. We have a hole to fill now, but we wish him all the best from this day forth.”
