Scene of Borrelli’s accident reopens today, more on stadium’s unsafe conditions

Although Buffalo News reporter and respected lacrosse contributor Tom Borrelli continues to remain in critical condition, presently paralyzed from the neck down and breathing with a respirator while family and friends hold out hope that his condition will improve after major swelling subsides, the stadium in which Borrelli tragically fell down a “staircase” is under major deserved scrutiny by many papers in the Buffalo area.
The Buffalo News is reporting that Borrelli’s fall was not the first at the stadium, which the Artvoice Daily reminds is actually titled Robert Rich All High Stadium.
Although district school spokes people have not returned calls to The Buffalo News in regards to previous incidents of media falling or injuring themselves while attempting to scale the unsafe stairs, the paper quoted high school football magazine publisher, Mark Adair, who said, “I came down and whacked my forehead, because you’re looking down at these stairs, they’re treacherous. And I whacked my head on a beam. And down I went. Just instantaneous.”
The Artvoice Daily also adds that funds in previous years had been used for such things as uniforms, a new scoreboard and of all things, staff retreats, while plans of improving the stairs and press box that the staircase leads to were scrapped due to what were described as cost issues.
There have been no reports on whether the school district will now finally be improving the press area of the stadium, while many covering today’s football game say they will no longer scale the stairs due to fear that they themselves may take a serious fall as well.
Many people close to Borrelli that NLL Insider spoke to recently are still holding out much hope that Tom’s condition will improve over the next week and simply ask that we stay positive as he fights to regain movement.
Earlier this week, Tom’s wife Karen, who also works for The News, told the paper, “He can understand he’s in there,” while Tom’s father added, “He’s a determined guy. We’re hoping he improves.”
