Philadelphia Wings forward and reigning NLL MVP, Athan Iannucci, has confirmed with NLL Insider that he appears to be on track for a return to the start of the NLL season after undergoing knee surgery earlier this off-season.

Iannucci had sustained two meniscal tears while suiting up for the St. Regis Indians of the MSL and had undergone successful surgery in July to repair his knee.

The Wings record breaker is currently working with respected sports physiotherapist, Karen Nichol, who also works with the Coquitlam Adanacs of the WLA and has worked with various elite athletes and national teams in Canada.

“We have been progressively becoming more athletically inclined in our sessions together,” said Iannucci, adding, “We are both optimistic in our beliefs that I will be ready to go for game one.”

The Wings open their 2009 campaign on January 3rd, just 47 days away.

Iannucci also says that he is at the point in his rehabilitation where Nichol now has him retraining and rebuilding his muscles for explosive and unpredictable movements, along with jumping and cutting under her strict supervision at about 75% speed.

Athan has been working with Nichol for the past fives months, both pre and post opp, and will continue to work with her three to five times a week leading up to his return.

Philadelphia will play their first game of the season against the defending champion Buffalo Bandits at HSBC Arena. Buffalo snapped the Wings six game winning streak to start the year last winter and also dropped them 14-12 in the first round of 2008’s playoffs.

Iannucci scored 18 total points against Buffalo last year, while the Wings only went 1-2 against one of their most heated rivals.
