John Grant Jr. Blog: Training Camp

Injured Rochester Knighthawks superstar John Grant, Jr. is doing a lot of things with his free time while he recuperates, helping coach the team as well as the Six Nations Arrows, as well as writing a regular blog for the Knighthawks’ website. This is the second blog entry from Junior. To read the first, Click here

Welcome back lax nation, hope your week has been well. Blog number two has me thinking back to my collegiate years…yes, all seven of them. Sitting here, stumped, staring at a blank computer screen with good ole Pearl Jam blaring in the background. I now realize how little time I really did spend at my desk as a Phys. Ed. major. I guess I will become a more proficient typist as the weeks go by. Anyway, back to the task at hand, namely blogging about something of interest to anyone besides myself.

I left off last week wondering how the first Knighthawk training camp would go. As a spectator all I can say is OUCH. I have never witnessed a Roch team run that intensely. The strength coach, Matt Green, ran the players into the ground on Saturday, and then put them through their paces again the next morning. His strategy was to torture the boys intermittently between coach Suggate’s lax drills. The sight of the boys gasping for air made me find one bright spot to having some time off. That relief soon wore off as it was then that I realized how much I was going to miss battling with the guys this year. I know their excellent effort will be the difference between raising a banner like in ‘07, versus picking early tee times like in ‘08.

The boys looked good out there for a first camp. The leaders came to camp in phenomenal shape as always, as did the boys from the ‘Boro. The new recruits looked eager to make their own mark, trying to crack a very deep lineup. It was especially awesome to witness the game’s greatest back in action. ‘Gaiter’ looked like he hasn’t missed a beat. The enthusiasm he showed toward competing at the highest level was inspirational. I only hope the young guys out there appreciated it as much as I did. I know Grant Crawley didn’t enjoy it, as he had to endure an extra 15 minutes of post practice shooting by #22. This extra work brought out Mr. Walters as well, who I am sure enjoyed the extra time on that ‘little’ net. Joe should have spent this time thinking of a New Jersey number to wear, as a few of the vets are trying to ban the rookies from donning his beloved #1. I am sure the boys will eventually relent. Treating to a night out at the Dinosaur BBQ could help his cause.

Lastly I would like to end this blog with a shameful plug for my Thanksgiving Lax Clinic, sponsored by Adidas. It is at the Brighton Sports Zone on November 29th. Check out the website at Proskillslacrosse.com. Well, I am off to see my Flyers beat up on the lowly Sabres at the HSBC tonight.

Thanks for stopping by,
Jr
