Last week the Philadelphia Wings lost one of the most classy, dependable, and professional ball players the franchise has ever had, when 12-year vet Peter Jacobs announced his retirement from the NLL.

Jacobs was the last player still with the team since their 2001 Champion’s Cup triumph over the Toronto Rock, unless of course Jake Bergey finds his way back into the Wings fold prior to the start of the new year.

“I held him in high regard from the first day I met him,” said current Wings GM Lindsay Sanderson of the franchise’s all-time leader in face-off wins and looseballs. “He was very good at what he did and never got the respect he deserved across the league with his dominance on taking draws.”

Jacobs joins a pretty lengthy list of vets that have either retired or taken a year hiatus heading into 2009. Jim Veltman, Pat Coyle, Kelly Hall and Jacobs have all called it a career, while Ben Prepchuk recently told the Edmonton Rush he would not be able to play this season. NLL Insider also learned that Minnesota Swarm defender Ian Rubel would not be playing this upcoming season due to a new career as a police officer. Rubel will be attending the Ontario Police College in Aylmer shortly.
