Florida Cup is ready to rock
Kevin Finneran isn’t getting much sleep these days, but don’t think for a minute he’s bummed about it. Heck no, not when he’s got the National Lacrosse League coming to Florida.

The Florida Lacrosse Cup, featuring the New York Titans and Toronto Rock playing their season opener Saturday night in Sunrise, Fla., is just two days away and Finneran’s got the pedal to the metal when it comes to pimpin’ this game. “We’re plugging along,” said the president of the Florida Lacrosse Group. “We’ve got our staff of volunteers working hard and the staff here at the Bank Atlantic Center has been great, which sends a nice message that they want this to succeed.” Finneran expects between 5,000 and 7,000 fans at the game. It’s a little lower than hoped, but as if competition for ticket sales for the Orange Bowl weren’t enough, the NFL’s Miami Dolphins threw a kink in the plans when they had the nerve to actually win the AFC East.
Still, with some of the Florida Cup tickets selling at $10, Finneran’s quick to remind that fans are gonna get plenty of bang for their buck.
Outside of lacrosse, fans will have plenty of activities from which to choose. There’s a festival going on outside the arena, where Finneran says it was 80 degrees and sunny on Wednesday. A youth tournament will take place and Rochester Knighthawks forward Gary Gait will be around to sign autographs.
“He vacations with his family in South Beach, so we asked if he’d come over and he agreed to,” says Finneran.
Finneran says he’s talked with plenty of fans and the feedback is pure energy. He’s hoping that translates well after the game, when he and his staff take a look at reports and crunch the numbers to present to the NLL in hopes of bringing a franchise to Florida permanently.
“That’s definitely the overall goal,” he said.
