The Money Ballers: Week 1
Even though the season opened with just three games this past week, we’re gonna start-up The Money Ballers anyways since there were some super clutch performances in both Buffalo and Florida on Saturday night.
For those that are new to the site or didn’t follow The Money Ballers either during the NLL season or CLA Junior A season, after the jump check out what it is and how we figure out who the best clutch performer in the game is.
The Money Ballers is a weighted scoring system which determines who the biggest money scorer in lacrosse is. Who scores when the game is on the line? Who knots things up when the chips are down? Who comes up huge late in the game and determines the outcome? All that is answered in The Money Ballers.
Points are awarded for tying goals, go ahead goals and of course game winning goals. Assists for the aforementioned clutch scenarios are included too, but scaled down versus the full points awarded for the actual goal.
The only thing changed from last year is that we are adding an extra point to OT goals after tweaking things just a bit. After reviewing last year’s numbers, OT goals probably shoulda been a little heavier, so we’ll see how that goes this year.
Below is a full rundown of what points are given for and when…
First Three Periods
Tying Goal = 1.0
Go Ahead Goal = 1.5
Game Winning Goal = 2.0
Any Assist = 0.5
Fourth Period
Tying Goal = 2.0
Go Ahead Goal = 3.0
Game Winning Goal = 3.5
Any Assist = 1.0
Overtime
Game Winning Goal = 5.0
Game Tying Assist = 2.0
Last year Athan Iannucci easily ran away with our inaugural Money Baller crown while Cody Jamieson did the same over the summer during the Canadian Junior A season.
Anyways, as the season progresses we’ll get a little more indepth with some of the top point getters and definitely some of the surprises this season. But to the one question that was posed early last year, that only players on winning teams will register on The Money Ballers, it’s interesting to note that even after just one game, New York’s Casey Powell and Jordan Hall, who both were on the wrong end of the Florida Cup, are both on the leaderboard already. Several players playing with team’s that didn’t exactly have the greatest records also did major damage to the charts during both the winter and summer in 2008.
