NLL Girl of the Week: Doris

Today is Doris’ day. Kind of a corny play on words? Probably, but how else are we supposed to introduce the National Lacrosse League Girl of the Week for the first week of the season?

Besides, if you don’t kick it old-school with the movies, you probably didn’t even get it. As it is, Doris comes to us from New York, where she’s a member of The Sirens and helps cheer on the Titans. She’s a second-year member of the squad and just wrapped up a season with the Flight Crew of the New York Jets. As much as she loves to dance and cheer, she’s got bigger dreams and she’s chasing them down. Casting and directing are big passions for the Communications major at St. John’s University.  She just finished an internship at VH1, where she helped with the casting duties for a reality TV show called Daisy of Love. “Casting for reality is so much fun because you meet such crazy people,” said Doris. “I’m very outgoing, so I feel like it’s the perfect job for me,” she told NLL.com.

Dancing is nothing new for Doris. She’s been a cheerleader at St. John’s and two years ago, she tried out for the dance team of the New York Knicks.

“My friend asked me to audition with her for the Knicks City Dancers,” said Doris. “I didn’t really have high hopes going into that, there were around 500 girls there, but I’ve wanted to get involved with a dance team ever since.”

She didn’t make the team but that didn’t douse the fire. She still harbors a dream of owning and operating a dance studio on Long Island and dancing for the Jets and Titans are helping build her cred. Besides, dancing for the Titans let her realize the dream of dancing at Madison Square Garden all while learning more about lacrosse. “It’s just an awesome experience,” she added. “I grew up around the game but was never really that interested in it until I got involved with the Titans. It’s exciting, I didn’t realize how rough it is. I’m really excited to come back this year.”

It’s not all dancing, either. Doris has a spot in her heart for charitable causes and helped out recently at a Christmas Party for the Marty Lyons Foundation for terminally ill kids.

So welcome to the NLL Girls of the Week club, Doris. You’re contestant No. 1 for the 2009 season and when the tournament brackets kick off in a few weeks, we’ll see you again. In the meantime, fans, don’t forget to check out the NLL profile page for Doris.
