Just over a minute into the Colorado Mammoth’s contest versus the Portland Lumberjax last night, Brian Langtry opened scoring and was an unstoppable force from there on out in the pivotal first quarter, scoring four including a natural hattrick to give the Mammoth a lead that would hold for the rest of the game en route to a 12-10 Colorado win to open their season. He added another goal and one assist later in the game. The architect on three of Langtry’s goals, Gavin Prout pitched in with two of his own plus four helpers, and Dan Carey added three assists. For the Jax, second-year stud Cory Conway ripped it up with three goals and three assists, and big Peter Morgan smashed in three and one. Gee Nash stopped 37 in the win, and Matt Disher 35 in a losing effort.

At the HP Pavilion last night the bad news for the San Jose Stealth was that they couldn’t quite complete the fourth quarter comeback, losing 12-10 to the Calgary Roughnecks. The good news is that they did it in front of 4,538 fans, up from an ‘08 opener of 3,653.

It was Pat Campbell in net for the Roughnecks, giving his team a scoreless third quarter as well as 26 saves on the night. In front of him Andrew McBride was a defensive force to be reckoned with, helping hold the Stealth to just 36 shots while scooping nine looseballs and assisting on two goals. Up front, Josh Sanderson did what Josh Sanderson does, scoring two and setting up five. Tracey Kelusky had three and four, Scott Ranger one and five, and Kaleb Toth and Dane Dobbie each had two goals and two assists.

For San Jose, Colin Doyle had one goal and five helpers, Jeff Zywicki two and four, rookie Rhys Duch two goals and three assists, Cam Sedgwick four assists, and Frank Resetarits three goals. Matt Roik made 46 saves in a losing effort, including what looked like an endless supply of arm saves in the first quarter.
