Buffalo, New York and Philly win in the east, plus game story links
It was a defensive battle that came down to the fourth quarter at the ACC last night, and Ken Montour and his defense holding the Toronto Rock scoreless for the final eleven minutes made all the difference as Mark Steenhuis scored twice and John Tavares once to make it 8-6 and out of reach as the Bandits move to 2-0 on the season.
Steenhuis had three goals and one assist on the game, Tavares two and one, and Billy Dee Smith, Mike Accursi and Cory Bomberry each added singles in the win. Montour stopped 38 of 44. For the Toronto Rock it was Kasey Beirnes accounting for half of the team’s offensive output, scoring three and assisting on one. Bob Watson made 39 saves in the loss.
Over at the Prudential Center the Boston Blazers kicked off their inaugural NLL season with plenty of fireworks as they went down to the New York Titans 19-14.
The Titans reeled in a big 5-1 lead to start the game and though the Blazers kept pace in the second and third, it was never enough to close the gap made in the first fifteen minutes of the game. Pat Maddalena and Casey Powell each had nine points, while Jordan Hall added seven and Mike McLellan five. Matt Vinc stopped 33 in the win. The Blazers got a big game out of Brenden Thenhaus who scored four and helped out on four more, Dan Dawson with three goals and two assists, and Gary Bining with three and one. The Titans move to 1-1 on the season.
Over in Rochester, the Philadelphia Wings bounced back from a loss last week and a first-quarter deficit to take the 16-13 win over the Knighthawks, as accurately predicted by wingszone favourite Hollywood42. Trailing 5-4 after the first, the Wings outscored the Knighthawks in all three of the remaining quarters to move to 1-1.
Merrick Thomson broke out for Philly, scoring four and assisting on one. Sean Thomson scored three on just four shots, Kyle Sweeney put in two along with two helpers, and Kyle Wailes scored one and set up six. For the Knighthawks, Gary Gait scored five and Shawn Williams scored two and assisted on six.
