The National Lacrosse League handed down suspensions to San Jose Stealth players Matt Roik and Ryan Marshall and also to Colorado Mammoth defender Rich Catton, stemming from incidents coming out of games played this past weekend.
Roik was hit with a ten minute intentional contact during a dead ball situation misconduct during the Stealth’s 12-10 loss to the Calgary Roughnecks. Necks forward Scott Ranger had just iced the game at the 14:43 mark of the fourth period and would later get struck by Roik near the team benches, dropping to the turf after contact was made.
Marshall’s suspension is due to a high hit he dished out during the Stealth’s other loss in Week 2, coming at the 11:16 mark of the third period against the Minnesota Swarm.
And finally, Catton was hit with a sit-down after coming off the bench to fight Portland Lumberjax’s defender Brodie Merrill. Previous to the tilt, Catton had rocked Jax’s forward Ryan Powell with what appeared to be an illegal shot to the head. The hit on Powell went undisciplined during the game.
All three suspensions appear to be one gamers, although, expect each player to appeal the suspension.
In other player movement, the Colorado Mammoth signed 32-year old American keeper Jeremy Ogden to their practice roster this past week, which certainly may have been spurred on by the team’s lackluster showing against Portland in the second half of their home-and-home in Week 2 (make sure to scroll down to the links for a great read on Ogden from March 2007).
In order to shore up a spot for Ryan Benesch in Edmonton, the Rush have released former Toronto Rock prospect, Mike MacLeod, and earlier in the week dropped Daryl Gibson to make room for the recently signed Callum Crawford. NLL Insider’s Steve Kojima also confirmed that Benesch will be in the lineup this weekend when the Rush host the Portland Lumberjax on Friday night. It will be Benesch’s first start during the 2009 season after being a healthy scratch for both of the Toronto Rock’s games this year, pervious of course to yesterday’s trade.
