Wings extend win streak to two with 14-9 win over Rush, plus links

Edmonton Rush fans certainly got their dollar’s worth of lacrosse last night. From the other team. The Philadelphia Wings took a 3-1 lead to start the first and by the end of the third had a 10-4 stranglehold, eventually ending the game with a 14-9 win on the strength of six goals from Merrick Thomson and four from AJ Shannon.

In addition to the big nights from Thomson and Shannon, Drew Westervelt put up two goals and two assists, Mat Giles scored one and assisted on four, Kyle Wailes set up five, and Thomas Hajek dished three. Brandon Miller turned away 39 of 48, including 12 in the first quarter and 13 in the fourth.

Would someone like to start the slow clap from the back of the room?

One thing I don’t think is the problem is the sport itself. Lacrosse is a great game and I don’t think there’s a sports prejudice involved here, other than the one which seems to come through from the very people who are trying to sell you lacrosse.

They don’t promote their players because they don’t want to have to pay them more than a pittance and they insult the game by playing music with somebody shouting on the P.A. between whistles. I’ve never encountered a league which worked harder at chasing potential customers away.

Swarm rookie Kevin Buchanan explodes for five goals to down Rock 13-10, plus links

First year Swarm forward Kevin Buchanan kicked off another weekend of National Lacrosse League action last night with a massive five goals and one assist to lead his team to a 13-10 win in just his third game of the season. Minnesota’s win coupled with Edmonton’s loss last night has boosted the Swarm out of the West division basement, for the time being. The Toronto Rock are currently sitting in last place in the East.

Watching a lacrosse game with baseball legend Jim Rice? It can happen in Boston

It’s not often that baseball and lacrosse are on the same page, but the Boston Blazers know how to knock it out of the park. Baseball Hall of Famer Jim Rice will be at the Blazers’ home game Saturday night against the San Jose Stealth and someone’s gonna watch the second half in a VIP suite with Rice. The first 1,500 fans to enter TD Banknorth Garden get a baseball and at halftime, the fan whose thrown baseball lands closest to the Blazers logo on the turf wins a suite seat with Rice. Q&A With Mammoth Offensive Coordinator Dan Perreault

When the Mammoth won the NLL Championship in 2006, they averaged 12.5 goals per game and boasted the league’s best offense. It’s no secret their offensive production has gone down slightly and after bottoming out with a 14-5 loss to Portland in their home opener, the team once known for it’s electric offense is retooling with the goal of finding their stride once again.

And the man selected to bring Colorado’s offense back to glory: Dan Perreault, who was brought in as the team’s new offensive coordinator on January 20th. Since then, Colorado has shown flashes of brilliance, posting a solid victory over Minnesota and a come-from-behind win over then-undefeated Calgary. Perreault took a few minutes to talk about the process of breaking bad habits, shifting offensive philosophies and the long road ahead.

When the Rush host Philadelphia tonight at 9:30 EST, they hope to have a sold-out building. But they’ve been averaging just about 7,000 a game so far, so they’ve done something drastic: tickets for tonight’s contest start at $1 (that’s 78 cents in the U.S.).

NLLInsider.com staff picks for Week 9 of the National Lacrosse League

It’s almost like no one wants to win this thing. Yours truly and Ty Pilson are tied again up at the top of the standings with 29-17 records and even though Brian Shanahan is bringing up the rear with a 23-23 record, he’s just six games out of it. The rest of the staff packs up the middle like a tight penalty-killing unit, but a 5-2 weekend for Paul Tutka was prolly the most impressive of the bunch last week. So what’s up for Week 9?
