Tuts’ World Famous Lacrosse Trivia: Round 1 Revisited
Some pretty decent guesses last week after the first round of Tut’s World Famous Lacrosse Trivia, but no one was able to sweep the board.
Find out the answers to last week’s questions and who off the forums has a pretty sizeable lead to kick things off. Also, check back later on Friday for Round 2 of NLL Insider’s lacrosse trivia.
Answers (first poster to get an answer correct is awarded the points):
1. What current NLL coach fought (receiving a five-minute penalty) during the 2001 NLL Champion’s Cup final, and who did he square off with from the opposing team in that fight? Bonus: Who scored the last goal in the dying seconds of that game?
Answer: Former Philadelphia Wings player and current Boston Blazers Head Coach, Tom Ryan, fought former Toronto Rock defender, Rodd Squire, in the 2001 Cup final.
Bonus: Chris Gill
Who got it: WINGS4EVER got both questions right.
2.What former Jr. A St. Catharines Athletics’ player is currently a captain in the American Hockey League, and what three NHL teams has he suited up for during his hockey career?
Answer: Zenon Konopka played sporadically for the 2002 A’s team that lost to the Burnaby Lakers in the Minto Cup. He currently captains the AHL’s Norfolk Admirals and has played NHL minutes for Anaheim, Columbus and Tampa Bay.
Who got it: UdaMann
3. Previous to the 2009 season, what player has accumulated the most penalty minutes over the last four seasons in the NLL (2005-2008)? Bonus: Who ranks second and third over that same time span too? The three players in question have combined for 679 PIM over those four seasons.
Answer: Thomas Hajek has the highest PIM total over the past four years (248).
Bonus: Kyle Laverty (233) and Pat Merrill (198) sit 2nd and 3rd for most minutes in the sin bin over that same stretch.
Who got it right: WINGS4EVER guessed Hajek correctly and Bruiser28 impressively got Laverty and Merrill, complete with their time in the box too.
4. What current NCAA Division I coach played on the same team as current San Jose Stealth Assistant Coach, Chris Hall, in the now defunct first edition of the NLL in the 1970s? Bonus: What Canadians does that NCAA coach presently have on his roster heading into the 2009 college season?
Answer: Current Virginia U coach Dom Starsia played with Chris Hall on the Boston Bolts in the first instalment of the NLL during the 70’s.
Bonues: Starsia currently has both Garrett Billings and Garett Ince in his lineup, Billings from Langley, BC and Ince hailing from Oakville, ON.
Who got it: WINGS4EVER got both questions right.
5.Who led the Coquitlam Adanacs in regular season scoring during their most recent Mann Cup winning season? Bonus: What team did the player in question primarily play for this past summer?
Answer: Former NLLer Kim Squire led the Adanacs in regular season scoring during the team’s one and only Mann Cup win in 2001.
Bonus: Squire played for the Mohawk Stars in the Sr. B loop this past summer.
Who got it: Just one current NLL coach got this one right. No one off the boards got either answer right.
6. Besides Gordon Purdie, name two Australian born lacrosse players that were drafted (via the entry draft) into the NLL?
Answer: Although there have been a few true Aussies that have played in the NLL, there are only two that join Purdie as being entry draft picks. A number of people got Adelphi grad Wes Green correct, but no one off the boards guessed former Maryland legend and World Champion, Jen Adams, who was drafted by the Washington Power in the last round of the 2001 draft. Only one NLL staffer got this one right.
7.What former NLLer ran against current PLPA President, Peter Schmitz, for the player’s union presidency prior to the start of the 2006 NLL season? Bonus: What year was the PLPA founded?
Answer: Ted Dowling ran against Schmitz but was out voted in the race.
Bonus: The PLPA website states they set-up shop in 1991.
Who got it: WINGS4EVER got Dowling and BretMac got ‘91.
8.What former NHLer won the OLA Jr. A loop’s Most Valuable Player award more times than any other player before or after him?
Answer: Best known for being one of the NHL’s most effective playmakers, Adam Oates also had a very successful junior lacrosse career, winning three MVP nods with Etobicoke in the early eighties. Oates also scored close to 100 Pts in his one and only Sr. A season with the Excels before going pro in hockey and joining the Adirondack Red Wings after being signed as an undrafted free agent by the Detroit Red Wings. Also, check out this great find by IL’s James Schaffer in a classic Oates commercial.
Who got it: j44
9. Although he holds a career goals against average below ten, what former NLL goaltender has not played in the NLL since 2002? His career save percentage stands at .786% as well.
Answer: The only backup tender the Montreal Express ever knew, Alain Lalumiere, who fit into 26 minutes very late in Montreal’s one and only season in the current NLL.
Who got it: No one on the boards got this and only one NLL assistant coach pulled this one out of his back pocket.
10.What two players shared the United States’ goaltending duties during the 2003 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship? Bonus: What current NLLer and Canadian musician starred opposite one another in a Kappa ad that ran on Sportsnet in Canada during the WILC in ‘03?
Answer: The two keepers the US had on their roster for the first WILC were Dwight Maetche and Jake Henhawk. Although a very popular answer, Erik Miller, along with a number of other MLL signed players, were not given the green light to participate.
Bonus: Blaine Manning chased after Canadian rocker Bif Naked in a Kappa ad that ran during the entire WILC. Kappa was Team Canada’s jersey and apparel sponsor.
Who got it: WINGS4EVER got the keeper combo right while thegreenbastard was the only one that got Manning and Bif. One NLL coach came pretty close but guessed Pink instead.
So, for those keeping track, the standings look like this after Round 1…
WINGS4EVER 7Pts
Bruiser28 1Pt
BretMac 1Pt
j44 1Pt
UdaMann 1Pt
thegreenbastard 1Pt
Check back later today for Round 2.
